Indian cuisine has entered the global culinary scene with a bang. You can now find Indian restaurants everywhere, with people across the globe trying out desi foods. But there is one British chef who fell in love with a particular Indian dish and started selling it himself. Angus Denoon, a British chef, visited Kolkata many years ago and jhalmuri caught his fancy. Jhalmuri is a popular Bengali street food made with puffed rice, spices and sauce, resembling bhel puri. Love for jhalmuri made Denoon open his own jhalmuri food stall in London, called Jhalmuri Express.

Recently, Ravi Nair, the President of the US-India Importers’ Council (USIIC) and CEO of the Rich Minds Centre of Excellence, spotted the stall and shared a video of Denoon making jhalmuri, on LinkedIn. He wrote in the caption, “Loved seeing this Foreigner selling the most popular ‘Indian Bhelpuri’ on the streets in the United Kingdom.”
“For my Non-Indian friends – Bhelpuri is a savoury snack originating from India, and is also a type of chaat. It is made of puffed rice, vegetables and a tangy tamarind sauce, and has a crunchy texture,” he added.
In another post, he wrote, ultimately the excitement and thrill was about a foreigner selling an Indian delicacy in a typical Indian style in a foreign country.”

Back in the year 2019, Angus Denoon caught the attention of Indians when he was seen selling jhalmuri by cricket fans during the India vs Australia World Cup match in London. The fact that he follows the typical style of serving jhalmuri in a cone made from paper torn from a magazine won hearts.
