Director Pan Nalin’s internationally acclaimed film ‘Chhello Show’, titled ‘Last Film Show’ in English, has been selected as India’s official entry into the Oscars 2023.

The coming-of-age movie, which has won critical acclaim around the world, has beaten the likes of SS Rajamouli’s ‘RRR‘ and Vivek Agnihotri’s ‘The Kashmir Files’ to become the country’s official contender in the Best Foreign Film category at the upcoming Academy Awards.

Reacting to the happy news, director Pan took to his handle to tweet, ” OMG! What a night this going to be! Gratitude to Film Federation of India and thank you FFI jury members. Thank you for believing in Chhello Show. Now I can breathe again and believe in cinema that entertains, inspires and enlightens!”

The Gujarati film is said to be partly an autobiographical drama that follows nine-year-old boy Samay, whose life turns upside down after watching his first movie.

Nalin is known for his visually striking body of work in films like ‘Samsara’, ‘Valley of Flowers’ and ‘Angry Indian Goddesses’.

A source told ETimes, “The jury is having a strong discussion on the Malayalam film. There are strong cases being made for the big Telugu hits RRR and Shyam Singha Roy, too.”

‘Last Film Show’, comes as a dark horse in this race for Oscar glory, especially at a time when Rajamouli’s RRR was tipped to be a worthy competitor not just in the Best Foreign Film category, but even a frontrunner in the Best Film and Best Director categories.

The film which took the world by storm with a smashing Rs 200 crore debut and a lifetime collection of over Rs 1100 crore, was expected to help the country strike gold at the Oscars.

‘Last Film Show’ will now go up against other international films like Korea’s ‘Decision to Leave’ and Mexico’s ‘Bardo’ that are already among the favourites to win the top prize.
