A festival for married women, Karva Chauth is one of the most celebrated occasions across North India – especially in the states of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar. This festival is also marked in Andhra Pradesh, where it is referred to as Atla Tadde. According to the lunisolar calendar, every year Karwa Chauth falls on the fourth day after ‘Purnima’ in the month of Kartika. This year, it falls on November 1, 2023. On this day, women observe nirjala fast from sunrise to moonrise and worship the Moon God wishing for matrimonial bliss. Another significant ritual during the festival is sargi. It is basically a meal hamper loaded with good food, jewelleries, and clothes that the mother-in-law presents to her daughter-in-law.

The women who observe the Karwa Chauth fast eat the sargi (food in the hamper) before sunrise and then begin the fast.
