Gold futures at newer highs on MCX, touches 50,700 –Check details | Bullion News

[ad_1]

New Delhi: Gold futures touched newer heights on the the Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX) by touching Rs 50707, mark per 10 grams silver prices climbed touched the day’s high of Rs 62400 per kg.

At 3.11 pm on the Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX), August gold contracts were trading 0.97 percent higher at Rs 50,565 per 10 gram. September futures for silver were trading 1.14 percent higher at Rs 61,809 per kg.

Gold steadied near a nine-year peak on Thursday as an escalation in U.S.-China tensions bolstered its safe-haven appeal, with investors also looking for a hedge against possible inflation as more stimulus is rolled out to support pandemic-hit economies, a Reuters report said.

Spot gold was up 0.1% at $1,874.21 per ounce by 0646 GMT, after declining earlier in the session on mild profit-booking after prices hit their highest since September 2011 at $1,876.16. U.S. gold futures rose 0.6% to $1,875.50.

A Reuters poll showed the metal could push towards record highs over the next 18 months as the crisis encourages investors to hoard it as a hedge against possible turmoil in wider markets.

US move to shut China’s Houston consulate draws questions about political motives

0

[ad_1]

Deputy Secretary of State Steve Biegun pointed Wednesday to “a growing number of disputes” between the US and China over Beijing’s “increasingly hardline and aggressive actions” that have led the administration to take action, including closing the consulate in Houston.

Lawmakers, former officials and experts said strong pushback is needed to counter China’s cyber and industrial espionage, its human rights abuses in Hong Kong and Xinjiang and aggressive expansion in the South China Sea — but some suggested the Houston consulate was a politically driven and very carefully calibrated target, one chosen to create the appearance of toughness while avoiding the risk of a major clash.
White House officials have privately outlined a strategy of getting tough on Beijing to bolster President Donald Trump‘s sagging poll numbers before the election, partly to deflect blame for the disastrous and economically damaging White House response to the coronavirus pandemic, but also to return to economic nationalism themes that carried Trump to victory in 2016.

Jeff Moon, a former assistant US trade representative for China, noted the State Department said the Houston order was a response to Chinese intellectual property theft and said that raised questions about why only one consulate was targeted.

“If that were the real reason, the US would close the San Francisco consulate, which covers Silicon Valley,” said Moon, who was among those who suggested politics might be at work. “This action is red meat for Trump supporters who are eager to retaliate against China and divert attention from Trump’s disastrous Covid-19 policy.”

US State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said the consulate was directed to close “in order to protect American intellectual property and Americans’ private information,” but did not immediately provide additional details of what prompted the closure. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is scheduled to give a speech on China Thursday and just completed a trip in Europe to urge a tougher stance against Beijing, declined to offer details about the consulate decision. The State Department didn’t respond to requests for further explanation.

Sen. Angus King, an independent of Maine who caucuses with Democrats, told CNN’s John Berman on “New Day” Wednesday that he was not aware of any “recent intelligence of particular Chinese activities, either with regard to our elections, or the whole confrontation between our two countries — theft of intellectual property” that may have driven the decision.

Trump blasts Beijing in public, but privately Trump org imports tons of Chinese goods
“There certainly is a good reason to confront China. My concern is, escalating this tension, is it really about confronting China, or does it have something to do with an election in four months?” King, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said.

A former official who left the Trump administration last year said that Trump often pushed back on advisers who urged him to impose tougher punitive measures on China out of concern that it would jeopardize trade negotiations.

Even so, as Covid-19 began devastating public and economic health in the US, the President’s Republican allies and influential White House staff, including Jared Kushner, began arguing that one way to energize the President’s political base is by blasting China over its failure to stem the spread of the disease early on, administration officials and three people familiar with Kushner’s thinking have told CNN.

Moon, who now runs China Moon Strategies, a consultancy on US-China trade and economic relations, said targeting the Houston consulate was a way for the President to thread the needle between appearing tough yet not taking on much risk.

The US and Chinese governments informally pair their consulates, with China’s Houston facility informally linked to the US consulate in Wuhan. Moon noted that the Wuhan consulate reportedly remains closed due to coronavirus, “so China could ‘close’ and escalate the diplomatic war as little as possible.”

A ‘vast network of spies’

On Wednesday, Biegun told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that Trump moved to close the consulate because of increasing aggression by China.

Biegun pointed to “commercial espionage and intellectual property theft from American companies; unequal treatment of our diplomats, businesses, NGOs, and journalists by Chinese authorities; and abuse of the United States’ academic freedom and welcoming posture toward international students to steal sensitive technology and research from our universities in order to advance the PRC’s military capabilities.”

“It is these factors which led the President to direct a number of actions in response, including yesterday’s notification to the PRC that we’ve withdrawn our consent for the PRC to operate its consulate in Houston, Texas,” he said.

On Wednesday, Trump said “it’s always possible” that he will order more Chinese consulates closed, adding that US officials thought there was a fire at the Houston consulate but apparently “they were burning documents.”

Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, the acting chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, wrote on Twitter Wednesday that closing the Houston consulate “needed to happen,” and claimed it is a “central node of the Communist Party’s vast network of spies.”

Asked about that allegation, a current US intelligence official agreed, telling CNN that “of course it was” used for spying. “We’ve been watching them for a while,” they said. That official declined to comment on why the decision was taken now to close the Houston consulate.

TikTok is a national security threat, US politicians say. Here's what experts think
The Justice Department’s top national security official said the closure was unrelated to federal charges unsealed Tuesday against two Chinese hackers for a 10-year campaign to steal intellectual property from hundreds of businesses across the globe, including recently from four American companies researching the coronavirus.

Instead, Assistant Attorney General John Demers said the administration moved against the Houston consulate to disrupt China’s theft of defense and trade secrets after a “slow buildup” of activity. “It wasn’t so much one particular thing but a slow buildup of what we’ve been seeing over time and a decision made to take a strong step to not just confront it in a general sense but to actually disrupt it by closing that consulate,” Demers said.

Former officials were perplexed. Danny Russell, the former Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs who left the department in 2017, said that when he was at State and the National Security Council, “the Chinese consulate in Houston did not have a particular reputation as an acute vector of espionage.”

“It is very hard for me to figure out what China could do uniquely from its consulate in Houston that it could not equally well do from its consulates in Boston, LA, or NY, from the embassy in DC or through non-official cover,” Russell said. “It is inconceivable that shutting down a consulate will stop espionage.”

“The drama of this action makes it seem like a teaser for Pompeo’s” speech Thursday, Russell added. “This has a very distinct wag-the-dog feel to it.”

CNN’s James Griffiths in Hong Kong, and Jamie Crawford, David Shortell, Zachary Cohen and Jennifer Hansler in Washington contributed to this report

New Delhi: Low-cost Airline SpiceJet on Thursday said it has been designated as the Indian scheduled carrier to operate flights between India and the US.

“This is to inform you that in terms of the Air Services Agreement between the Government of India and the Government of the United States of America, SpiceJet has been designated as Indian scheduled carrier to operate on agreed services between India and the USA,” the company said in a statement.

So far, only the national carrier Air India has been operating flights on India-US routes. SpiceJet has become the first Indian budget carrier to operate services to the United States. The Airline major has however not revealed commencement dates or destinations.

“It gives me immense pleasure to share that SpiceJet has been designated as an Indian scheduled carrier to operate between India and the US. This designation would help us plan for our international expansion in a much better and calibrated manner. I have always maintained that there is an opportunity in every adversity and the present crisis situation has seen SpiceJet rise to the occasion and play a pivotal role. From operating over 4300 cargo flights to carrying over 24,000 tons of cargo to operating over 400 charter flights to bring back thousands of stranded Indian nationals back home, SpiceJet has worked non-stop and contributed in whatever manner possible, ” Ajay Singh, Chairman & Managing Director, SpiceJet said.

Scheduled international passenger flights have been suspended in India since March 23 due to the coronavirus pandemic. After nearly two months of suspension to combat the coronavirus outbreak, the government resumed scheduled domestic passenger flights on May 25. However, it had then allowed the airlines to operate at a maximum of 33 percent of their pre-COVID domestic flights. The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MOCA) increased the limits on June 26 from 33 per cent to 45 percent.

BlacRock malware hits Android smartphones, steals your banking details | Technology News

0

[ad_1]

New Delhi: After the Joker malware, another malware BlacRock has surfaced which is said to be stealing your banking details.

“Around May 2020 ThreatFabric analysts have uncovered a new strain of banking malware dubbed BlackRock that looked pretty familiar. After investigation, it became clear that this newcomer is derived from the code of the Xerxes banking malware, which itself is a strain of the LokiBot Android banking Trojan. The source code of the Xerxes malware was made public by its author around May 2019, which means that it is accessible to any threat actor,” ThreatFabric analysts said in a research.

The research says that the target list of the BlackRock malware contains an important number of social, networking, communication and dating applications.

“So far, many of those applications haven’t been observed in target lists for other existing banking Trojans. It therefore seems that the actors behind BlackRock are trying to abuse the grow in online socializing that increased rapidly in the last months due to the pandemic situation,” the research paper said.

BlackRock’s target lists has 337 unique applications and several applications haven’t been observed to be targeted by banking malware before.  Most targeted apps are related to banks operating in Europe, followed by Australia, the United States of America and Canada, ThreatFabric said.

“Those new targets are mostly not related to financial institutions and are overlayed in order to steal credit card details,” it says adding that most of the non-financial apps are social, communication, lifestyle and dating apps.

The researchers fear that the number of new banking Trojans will keep growing, leading to banking fraud and posing risks even for consumers who are not using mobile banking. It cites trojans like BlackRock that targets 3rd party apps.

“The second half of 2020 will come with its surprises, after Alien, Eventbot and BlackRock we can expect that financially motivated threat actors will build new banking Trojans and continue improving the existing ones,” the research says.

Liverpool lifts ‘special’ Premier League title after thrilling victory against Chelsea

0

[ad_1]

“Absolutely special” was how manager Jurgen Klopp described getting his hands on the coveted piece of silverware, 30 years since Liverpool was last crowned English champion.

“We don’t compare as we haven’t won it before … these boys are so special. I couldn’t be more proud of them throwing in a performance like this on the pitch in an open game, obviously, but nice, nice goals,” he told reporters.

“Incredible goals, super football in moments and I loved the game so we could enjoy so far and will enjoy the rest of the night.”

Jordan Henderson lifts the Premier League trophy after Liverpool's victory over Chelsea.

In Wednesday’s lively encounter, Liverpool raced into a 3-0 lead with goals from Naby Keita, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Georginio Wijnaldum before Olivier Giroud pulled one back for Chelsea on the stroke of half-time.

Roberto Firmino extended the host’s lead, but scores from Tammy Abraham and Christian Pulisic kept Chelsea in the contest, only for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to seal the win and kick-start Liverpool’s title celebrations.

Keita and Alexander-Arnold scored the pick of Wednesday’s goal, the former with a 25-yard strike to open the scoring before Alexander-Arnold doubled Liverpool’s lead with long-range free-kick that had goalkeeper Kepa rooted to the spot.

Club captain Jordan Henderson lifted the trophy on a specially built podium on Anfield’s Kop after the match as ticker tape fell on the players and fireworks lit up the night sky. Indeed, fireworks were set off outside the stadium even as the match was being played.

“Of course, you’re going to have individuals that perform but the most important thing is the team,” Henderson told Sky Sports.

Jurgen Klopp poses with the Premier League trophy.

“We’re always there together for each other, it’s a really close group, as you can see, and that’s off the field and on the field.

“It makes a massive difference and it’s another thing the gaffer has brought since he’s come in — that togetherness in the dressing room. It has made a really big difference on the pitch.”

As the players celebrated on the pitch and in the locker room, Klopp admitted it was odd without fans in the stadium.

“It’s strange, you stand on a stage and there is nobody — not nobody, but not as many as you would imagine in a situation like that,” he said.

“But I have to say, the people who organized it made the best of it … I was never on the Kop before, it was pretty special and I think it makes sense in the moment when the people are not in that we use the Kop to celebrate it with them together in our hearts.”

Liverpool players celebrate with the Premier League trophy.

Fans congregated outside Anfield during the trophy presentation, lighting flairs and scaling the stadium walls despite warnings from the club and officials to stay at home given the coronavirus outbreak.

Merseyside Police introduced a 48-hour dispersal zone around the stadium in anticipation of supporters celebrating at Anfield, which also occurred last month when Liverpool’s status as champion was confirmed.

“To the vast majority of law-abiding members of the community and Liverpool fans, I just want to remind them that this order is not about bothering people going about their legitimate daily business,” said superintendent Dave Charnock.

Liverpool fans celebrate outside Anfield stadium during the Premier League trophy presentation.

“We would like to thank the vast majority of you who are adhering to the restrictions currently in place to protect the wider community as well as those who are continuing to keep an eye out for suspicious behavior and reporting it to us.

“It has never been more important than now to ensure that we all follow government advice to ensure the safety of those living in Merseyside.”

WTA chief Steve Simon hopes Palermo Open will provide blueprint for 2020

0

[ad_1]

WTA chief Steve Simon cannot wait for the Tour to get back up and running in Sicily next month and hopes the Palermo Open will provide a blueprint for tournament operations amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The women`s claycourt tournament, which gets underway in the Sicilian capital on August 3, will be the first across both the WTA or ATP tours since they were suspended in early March because of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

“I`d say there`s definitely an excitement to get back to doing what we love,” WTA Chairman and Chief Executive Simon told Reuters by video call from the United States.

“Obviously there`s been a lot of hard work that`s been done by the tournament promoters as well as the team to get us to this stage. So we`re going into this with great hopes.

“And hopefully we`ve found a solution that will allow tennis to operate in this environment.”

Simon said the Tour was looking to stage as many tournaments as possible in 2020 and the second week of the patched-together calendar will see events in Prague and the United States.

“I think our first three events — Palermo, Prague and Lexington — will certainly create that pathway for us,” he added.

“Those three tournaments are going to happen unless we should receive a last-minute issue from the government or local medical officials.”

RIGHT BALANCE

The ATP`s bid to restart the men`s season at the Citi Open in Washington D.C. in early August has already foundered and Simon said the WTA were fortunate that their first tournament was in Europe.

“It`s just a difference in our calendars that provided us the opportunity to begin in Europe, which I do think has been advantageous for us,” said Simon.

“If you look around the world, the European Union is probably the most stable area outside of maybe China proper right now. That definitely helped us.

“And starting them on clay is good from a health perspective as well, a little softer surface, as they come back to play and then they can evolve into the hardcourt season.”

The second and third stops on the hardcourt season are in New York at the Western & Southern Open and U.S. Open but there are big questions over whether they can go ahead and Simon said a final decision would be made soon.

The restart has divided opinion among the players, with some 200,000 new COVID-19 cases being reported globally every day and international travel restrictions still in place.

“Where we got to was, unless everybody can travel nobody plays? Or do we try to find opportunities for all of those that can play and feel comfortable playing?” Simon said.

“And we got to the balance: We should be trying to get as many jobs and as many opportunities for as many people as we can to continue our sport. Obviously, if we don`t think the balance is right or we think the conditions have changed and it`s not safe, (or) we don`t like what`s happening due to the challenges we have, we will not hesitate to shut down,” Simon added.

North Korea ‘ghost ships’ washed up in Japan because of China’s ‘dark’ fishing fleet, NGO says

0

[ad_1]

For years, Japan’s north coast had been the site of a macabre phenomena: fishing boats washing up on shore carrying the bodies of dead North Koreans, more than 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) from their homeland.

But the numbers in 2017 were unprecedented: More than 100 boats landed on the Japanese coast with 35 bodies on board. Only 66 boats had washed up the year prior.

No one was able to explain why so many of these so-called “ghost ships” ended up in Japan that year. One Japanese Coast Guard said it could be as simple as the weather. Others speculated that North Korea’s aging fishing fleet was to blame.

More of these rickety boats have washed up on shore en masse since, though with fewer bodies. The mystery has puzzled authorities for years, but a study published Wednesday by international nonprofit Global Fishing Watch offers a new, compelling theory. It blames Chinese “dark fishing fleets.”

The report’s authors used various satellite technologies to analyze marine traffic in northeast Asia in 2017 and 2018 and found that hundreds of Chinese fishing vessels were sailing in waters off North Korea. The Chinese ships appeared to be fishing there illegally, pushing North Korea’s own fleet, which is poorly equipped to travel long distances, further away from the North Korean coast and into Russian and Japanese waters.

This graphic from Global Fishing Watch shows the location broadcast by all vessels identified as likely fishing ships sailing within North Korea's claimed exclusive economic zone during 2017 and 2018.
Fishing in North Korean waters, or buying and selling North Korean fish internationally, is a violation of international law. Pyongyang’s fish trade, which was worth an estimated $300 million a year, was sanctioned in 2017 by the United Nations Security Council as part of its effort to punish the Kim Jong Un regime for its repeated ballistic missile tests that year.

But that does not appear to have deterred some 900 Chinese ships in 2017 and 700 the following year, according to Global Fishing Watch’s report.

The nonprofit said these Chinese ships likely caught more than 160,000 metric tons of Pacific flying squid, one of the region’s most valuable seafood products, in 2017 and 2018 — more than South Korea and Japan combined during the same period. The estimated catch was worth more than $440 million.

While it’s not clear if North Korea could have made that much money from fishing its own waters, it now appears that Pyongyang was able to recoup some of its lost catch by selling fishing rights to foreign operators, likely Chinese ones. A United Nations report published in March claimed that North Korea earned an estimated $120 million in 2018 by selling or transferring fishing rights in violation of UN sanctions.

Jaeyoon Park, a senior data scientist at Global Fishing Watch and co-lead author of the study, said that the vessels spotted comprised “about one-third the size of China’s entire distant water fishing fleet.”

“It is the largest known case of illegal fishing perpetrated by vessels originating from one country operating in another nation’s waters,” he said.

With so many ships near the North Korean coast, the country’s own fishing fleet was then pushed out, forced to sail further away from shore to find their catch, and the consequences were deadly, according to Jungsam Lee, another one of the study’s co-authors.

“It is too dangerous for them to work in the same waters as the Chinese trawlers,” Lee said. “That’s why they’re pushed to work in Russian and Japanese waters and that explains why some of North Korea’s damaged vessels showed up on the beaches of Japan.”

Park and the other experts said they were able to track these vessels using new satellite and radar technologies that weren’t available in previous years. Open-source intelligence NGOs and nonprofits are increasingly using these resources to analyze marine traffic in the hopes of finding or better understanding tactics used to evade sanctions.
Global Fishing Watch said in a statement that the vessels illegally fishing in North Korean waters were believed to be owned and operated by “Chinese interests” because that’s where they were based. However, ships involved in illicit activity in these waters — whether moving goods at sea to avoid the prying eyes of customs officials or dredging sand — often lack proper paperwork, making them harder to track.

CNN has reached out to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for comment.

Chinese ships are seen sheltering from bad weather in Sadong port on Ulleung island in South Korea on November 11, 2017.

A sustainability issue

Northeast Asia’s waters are some of the most opaque and contested seas and fisheries anywhere in the world. China, Russia, Japan and the two Koreas are all engaged in some sort of territorial dispute with one another.

Fish stocks there have been declining dramatically in recent years, another major problem that the parties have failed to work out. Pacific flying squid stocks have dropped by 80% in South Korean waters and 82% Japanese waters since 2003, according to Global Fishing Watch.

A North Korean squid boat in operation in the Russian waters is seen sometime between between August and October 2018.
“While fishers and their families have watched their incomes plummet, academics are left puzzled over the most likely cause of this decline in catch. Many point to overfishing as the biggest culprit, while some suggest that climate change may be playing a part, with changes in water temperature affecting spawning and migration patterns. It seems to make depressing but all too familiar sense,” Park wrote in a blog post accompanying the study.
Fisheries sustainability is a major issue worldwide. It has sapped money and jobs from coastal communities that rely on the trade and driven an increase in piracy in places where the fishing industry cannot rely on a functioning coast guard, like Somalia.

Experts like Park believe that though Japan and South Korea have worked independently worked to make squid fishing more sustainable, “the absence of multilateral cooperation and information-sharing between all the countries involved in this transboundary fishery means it is impossible to get sound science and a regional management plan in place for the stock.”

South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and fisheries said it was reviewing the findings, while Masanori Miyahara, the president of the Japan Fisheries Research and Education Agency, said in a statement accompanying the Global Fishing Watch study that the lack of shared data is “is a major challenge considering the critical importance of squid in the region.”

“Illegal fishing in these waters is a very serious matter in Japan,” Miyahara said.

Park said his team’s research has highlighted a “fundamental failure in properly and transparently managing a shared resource” and that there is an “urgent need for cooperation between the countries involved in this fishery.”

Tokyo 2020: Here’s what we missed

0

[ad_1]

There is much to look forward to if and when the Games do begin on July 23, 2021, but it makes us long for what we missed this summer even more.

Four years ago in Rio, American artistic gymnast Simone Biles won four gold medals and a bronze, becoming one of the stars of the Games.
This was the summer when Biles was to cement her status as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, gymnast of all-time — as some have called her already.
Her dominance in the sport is akin to American Olympic sporting greats like Michael Phelps, Allyson Felix and Jenny Thompson.
At the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart last year, Biles completed a record-breaking clean sweep of gold medals in all five of her gymnastic disciplines for the first time in her career.

She is unbeaten in the all-around since 2013. Her dominance is unparalleled.

Biles had always maintained she would retire after this summer’s Games and, in April, the 23-year-old was not fully committing to taking part in the delayed Games. She is, however, now back in the gym. A Biles-less Olympics would not quite be the same.

Who will be the next Phelps?

Mark Spitz’s tally of seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Olympics was an achievement few thought would ever be surpassed.

That was until Michael Phelps splashed onto the scene.

Phelps managed six golds medals and two bronze at Athens in 2004. Spitz could rest easy for a little longer. But four years later, in Beijing, Phelps won a magnificent eight gold medals.

Spitz didn’t mind being bested, saying: “It goes to show you that not only is this guy the greatest swimmer of all time and the greatest Olympian of all time, he’s maybe the greatest athlete of all time.”
Michael Phelps waved goodbye for good after Rio 2016, but who will take over as king of the swimming pool?

Over the next two Olympic Games, in London and Rio, Phelps took his Olympic career total to 23 golds, three silvers and two bronze medals.

Phelps is now retired, and while it seems unthinkable that anyone will ever top his Olympic medal tally, who will fill his shoes as the figurehead of swimming?

The signs point to Caeleb Dressel.

At the 2019 World Aquatics Championships, Dressel won six gold medals and two silvers, breaking Phelps’ 10-year world record in the final of the 100-meter butterfly by 0.32 seconds.

Dressel may not race in the same range of events as Phelps, but he could well be Phelps’ successor as American swimming’s next great.

New and returning sports

With every edition of the Olympic Games, new sports are welcomed to the fray.

For Tokyo, five sports have been added to the schedule. Karate, sport climbing, surfing and skateboarding will be making their Olympic debuts, while baseball and softball return after a 12-year absence.

Much has been made of skateboard’s addition, owing to the celebrity of 12-year-old prodigy Sky Brown.

But the inclusion of all of these sports is huge to their respective international status.

Speaking to CNN’s Amanda Davies in an Instagram Live interview, Australian surfing superstar Sally Fitzgibbons said that the sport’s inclusion was key to showcasing it to new audiences.

“There’ll be some people tuning in … they would have never considered it; they would have never probably seen the beach or picked up a board and to be able to have that opportunity as a sport to showcase that is fantastic,” she said.

Fitzgibbons added that surfing’s addition was a sign of the Games modernizing and showing a willingness to “move with the times.”

Can Bolt be replaced?

Usain Bolt has been, arguably, the face of the Olympics since his showstopping performances in Beijing. So, the big question is: Can anyone replace the record-breaking showman?

The two foremost sprinters in the world at the moment are Americans Christian Coleman and Noah Lyles. Coleman is the reigning 100-meter world champion and Lyles the 200m world champion.

Who will fill the golden spikes of Usain Bolt?
Coleman is currently provisionally suspended for missing a third drug test in a 12-month period. It could lead to a two-year ban, which would rule him out of next year’s Games.
Anime fan Lyles, on the other hand, could be the man for the job.
Lyles’ start-line histrionics have led to him being described as a “rock star” by USA teammate Justin Gatlin.
The 23-year-old recently made headlines for appearing to have run a world-record 18.9-second 200m, only for replays to show he had instead run just 185m.

He may well break Bolt’s 19.19 second record in Tokyo though.

Mo’s quest for a three-peat

Having claimed a double-double in the 5,000m and 10,000m in Rio, Mo Farah set his sights on marathon running.
However, Farah’s announcement last year that he will defend his 10,000m title sets up a thrilling storyline as he attempts to become the first person to achieve the 10,000m Olympic three-peat.
Farah has been at the center of controversy in recent years, with his former coach Alberto Salazar, from whom he split in 2017, banned for four years for “multiple anti-doping rule violations.”
Mo Farah was aiming for a 10,000 meter three-peat at Tokyo 2020 before the postponement of the Games.

If the Briton can win a third 10,000m Olympic gold in Tokyo, he will enhance his standing as a great of long-distance running.

“I can feel Sushant Singh Rajput guiding me now”, says Dil Bechara director Mukesh Chhabra : Bollywood News

[ad_1]

Casting director turned director Mukesh Chhabra doesn’t know whether he should happy or sad. “Dil Bechara is my first film as a director. Ideally, I should be nervous excited and happy. But all my joy has been drained by the fact that the person who guided me through the making of this film, without whom I’d have never turned director, is no longer with me. Sushant should be here, holding my hand to the release. Without him, everything feels unreal, incomplete,” Mukesh’s predicament is hard to put in words.

“I can feel Sushant Singh Rajput guiding me now”, says Dil Bechara director Mukesh Chhabra

But he’s trying.

“I’m trying to wade through the process of release. All this is new to me. And Sushant abandoned when I needed him the most. Just talking about him makes me emotional. I called him Beta. He was very close to me and also my mother. He loved the parathas she made. She misses him as much I do,” says Mukesh as he recalls how he turned director.

“It would have never been possible without Sushant. When I got the chance to direct a remake of The Fault In Our Stars I agreed only because I knew Sushant would be my lead. He didn’t hear or read the script. This was the first time he had ever accepted a film without going through a narration. Only when we reached Jamshedpur for shooting, just three days before shooting was to start he asked for us to go through the script.”

Why Jamshedpur? “Because I wanted a small North Indian town with all its cultural diversity. In Jamshedpur you will find Bengalis and Tamils living side by side. I wanted the romance to start in a town like this and then make its journey to Paris.”

How much of the original has Mukesh retained in his remake? “It is an official remake. So the subject and characters are the same. But I’ve Indianized the original, made it more emotional added songs. Now I am waiting to see the audiences’ reaction to it. I realize it is a big responsibility to make sure that Sushant’s fans are not disappointed. I hope I’ll succeed in making them happy. I can feel Sushant guiding me. I speak to him when I get very nervous.”

Treasury yields fall as investors watch stimulus talks, jobs data and U.S.-China tensions

0

[ad_1]

U.S. government debt prices fluctuated Thursday morning as optimism over a fresh government coronavirus response bill failed to offset concerns over rising tensions between the U.S. and China.

At around 2:15 a.m. ET, the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note was lower at 0.5905% and the yield on the 30-year Treasury bond fell to 1.2848%. Yields move inversely to prices.

U.S. jobless claims data for the week ended July 17 will be in the spotlight Thursday and will be released at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists expect another 1.3 million workers to have filed initial claims for state unemployment benefits last week.

Senate Republicans late on Wednesday said they had reached accords in principle over portions of a potential aid package, which may be presented to Democratic counterparts this week as lawmakers look to rush legislation through before the end of the month.

CNBC reported Wednesday, citing sources, that Republicans are considering an extension of unemployment insurance benefits through to year-end, at a dramatically reduced level of $400 per month.

The positive sounds around the bill helped pull yields away from Wednesday’s lows, which came after a further souring of diplomatic ties between the world’s two largest economies. The U.S. has given China 72 hours to close its consulate in Houston amid allegations that it was a hotbed for spying.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin condemned the action and warned of unspecified retaliation if Washington does not reverse the decision.

The coronavirus pandemic remains on the agenda as Texas on Wednesday reported record daily increases in deaths and hospitalizations, while the head of the World Health Organization’s emergency program said the first use of vaccines currently advancing through testing cannot be expected until early 2021.

Pfizer and German biotech BioNTech said on Wednesday that the U.S. has agreed to pay $1.95 billion for its experimental Covid-19 vaccination in the hope of inoculating around 50 million people, should it prove to be safe and effective.

Auctions will be held Thursday for $30 billion of 4-week Treasury bills, $35 billion of 8-week bills and $14 billion of 10-year TIPS.

End of coaching stint with Team India could have been better, says Anil Kumble

0

[ad_1]

Former India spinner Anil Kumble has said that his coaching stint with the Indian senior side could have come to a better end. Kumble opened up about his coaching stint during an Instagram live session with former Zimbabwe pacer Pommie Mbangwa.

The spinner coached Virat Kohli-led side for one year before he resigned from the post in 2017.He had stepped down as the coach of the side after the Champions Trophy 2017 finals between India and Pakistan.

“I was very happy that I took up the role of coach of the Indian side. It was great, the one year I spent with the Indian team was really fantastic. Having been with great performers and again being a part of the Indian dressing room is a great feeling,” Kumble told Pommie Mbangwa during an Instagram live session.

“We did really well in that one year period. I was really happy that there were some contributions made and there are no regrets. I was happy moving on from there as well. I know the end could have been better but then that`s fine. As a coach, you realise, when it`s time to move on, it`s the coach who needs to move on. I was really happy I played a significant role in that one year,” he added.

When Kumble had resigned as the coach of the Indian side, he had termed the relationship with Virat Kohli as “untenable”.Under Kumble, India managed to reach the finals of the Champions Trophy, and the side enjoyed huge success in the Test format.

Kumble would now be coaching the Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The former Indian spinner had announced his retirement from international cricket in 2008 and finished with 619 wickets in the longest format of the game. He has the third-highest number of wickets in Tests, only behind Sri Lanka`s Muttiah Muralitharan (800) and Australia`s Shane Warne (708).
