Stuart Thompson added to expanded Ireland squad for England ODIs

0

[ad_1]

On the eve of his side’s tour of England, Ireland seamer Stuart Thompson has been added to the 22-member national squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series between the two sides.

Earlier, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had called-up four Hampshire academy players namely Scott Currie, Ajeet Dale, Harry Petrie and James Trodd to make up the numbers for Ireland’s training camp at the Ageas Bowl and for their intra-squad warm-up match.

After Dale was ruled out of the tour due to an injury, Thompson–who was a surprise omission in the original Ireland squad–was tested and added to the ODI squad.

“Hampshire CCC yesterday advised Cricket Ireland that one of their allocated players had sustained an injury. Given the strict COVID-19 protocol conditions in the bio-secure venue, it was too late for Hampshire to provide a replacement player. As such, an additional Irish player (who has been COVID-19 tested and cleared this week) will now travel with the squad,” Cricket Ireland said in an official statement.

Upon the Ireland players’ arrival to the Ageas Bowl, they will stay there for two-and-a-half weeks. Ireland are slated to play an intra-squad practice match on July 22 before a warm-up clash against England Lions on July 26.

Ireland will then decide a 14-member squad for the three-match ODI series against England, beginning July 30.

The full squad is as follows:

Andrew Balbirnie (c), Paul Stirling (vc), Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, Peter Chase, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Jonathan Garth, Tyrone Kane, Josh Little, Andrew McBrine, Barry McCarthy, James McCollum, Kevin O’Brien, William Porterfield, Boyd Rankin, Simi Singh, Harry Tector, Stuart Thompson, Lorcan Tucker, Gary Wilson, Craig Young.

[ad_1]

A few months ago, Ayushmann Khurrana had expressed his interest in playing the role of Professor from the Spanish show Money Heist if it were ever to be remade in India. In Money Heist, which is currently streaming on Netflix, the team of robbers wear a Dali mask and red jumpsuit to hide their true identities. The costume is shown as a symbol of resistance and national pride. It has also been used in real-life political protests.

Talking to a daily, Ayushmann said that the lockdown has fuelled his interest to learn new things. He said that his curiosity to understand the life and the work of Dali peaked after watching the web show.

Earlier, the actor had posted a video on his Instagram as he dons a similar pair of glasses as Professor and plays the title track of the show on piano. Captioning the video he wrote, “I want to be the professor. That’s why I’m wearing similar glasses and playing Bella Ciao. I want to put this out in the universe. Hello reverent filmmakers, are you listening? Please! I’m dying to do something like this. I’m itching to go on sets and work, like each and every human on this planet. We all want to go out and work. But patience is a virtue they say. Till then Bella Ciao. ???? #MoneyHeist”

‘I have to pinch myself’ – Hamilton claims 90th pole

0

[ad_1]

It was his seventh pole at the Hungaroring, a drawing him level with Schumacher, but he needed to set a track record to hold off teammate and standings leader Valtteri Bottas in final qualifying.

Hamilton lapped one of his favorite circuits in one minute 13.447 seconds, with Finn Bottas 0.107 seconds adrift on another day of total domination for the ‘Black Arrows’ team.

They qualified nearly a second faster than the Racing Point duo of Lance Stroll and Sergio Perez, who will occupy the second row for Sunday’s race.

Hamilton, who won the Styrian Grand Prix in Austria last weekend, will be a heavy favorite for victory which would be his eighth at the Hungaroring to equal another Schumacher F1 record for wins at the same track, the German’s coming in the French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours.

“I have to pinch myself,” said Hamilton. “It doesn’t register. It is quite humbling.

“Valtteri doesn’t make it easy for me so it requires absolute perfection when it comes to doing the laps and qualifying is one of the things I enjoy the most.

“The lap was nicely hooked up today. Nothing is a given here. I have got to deliver on the start tomorrow,” added the British star.

Bottas, who claimed the opening race of the Covid-19 delayed season, with Hamilton back in fourth after a penalty, knows his best chance of causing an upset will come at the start on Sunday.

“It’ll be a drag race between us into Turn 1, I can’t wait for that,” he said.

The vastly improved performance of the Racing Points has led to whispers in the paddock about their similarity to the 2019 Mercedes car, with Renault putting in a formal protest after the Styrian GP about its legality.

But that is of little concern to Canada’s Stroll, who is confident of turning qualifying speed into points on Sunday.

“We’ve had the pace all weekend and it was about piecing it all together in the qualifying session. Our sights are set on tomorrow and I’m going to try and grab some big points for the team,” he said.

Saturday saw an improved performance from Ferrari with Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc fifth and sixth, but still way off the pace while another team to struggle was Red Bull with Max Verstappen only seventh and teammate Alex Albon 13th after a sorry second qualifying session.

Fauci holds up New York as model for fighting coronavirus — ‘They did it correctly’

0

[ad_1]

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci attends the daily coronavirus briefing in the Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House on April 09, 2020 in Washington, DC. U.S. unemployment claims have approached 17 million over the past three weeks amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

White House health advisor Anthony Fauci has praised New York for its handling of the coronavirus pandemic, saying the state responded “correctly” to bring its outbreak under control.

“We know that, when you do it properly, you bring down those cases. We have done it. We have done it in New York,” Fauci said in an interview with “PBS NewsHour” that aired Friday evening.

“New York got hit worse than any place in the world. And they did it correctly by doing the things that you’re talking about,” he continued.

New York was once the epicenter of the outbreak in the United States with more than 10,000 new cases a day during its peak outbreak in April. The state has dramatically reduced daily new infections to 776 as of Thursday.

New York is one of nine U.S. states that has the virus under control, according to the tracking project Covid Act Now. Less than 1% of New Yorkers tested for the virus were positive Thursday, down from a high of more than 40%.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo instituted some of the strictest reopening requirements in the country, insisting that stay-at-home orders remain in place and many businesses remain closed far longer than states that are now seeing surges such as Texas and Florida.

More than 400,000 New Yorkers have been infected by the virus since the pandemic began and at least 32,463 people have died in the state.

New York City is scheduled to enter phase 4 on Monday, the next stage of reopening that allows outdoor activities like zoos, outdoor films and gardens. Indoor restaurants, bars, museums, and malls will remain closed, Cuomo said Friday.

“I’m so proud of what New Yorkers have done. But we must continue to be on alert,” Cuomo tweeted.

Cuomo has warned of a potential second wave of the coronavirus, as dozens of states around the country grapple with a spike in the number of confirmed coronavirus infections after reopening rapidly in the spring. Last Sunday, Florida reported more than 15,000 new infections, more than New York during the peak of its outbreak.

In his comments Friday, Fauci addressed the surges around the country, urging people to wear masks and pushing for the closure of bars to limit the spread of the virus.

“Stay away from crowds. Close the bars,” Fauci said. “You appeal to the people in the local areas, close those bars. They are seriously the — one of the major reasons why we’re seeing [the surges].”

“And I think, if we do that for a couple of weeks in a row,” he continued, “I think we’re going to see a turnaround, because we know that that works.”

The coronavirus outbreak has spread worldwide, with more than 14 million confirmed cases and over 597,000 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The U.S. has had more than 3.6 million cases and  at least 139,302 deaths, according to the latest tallies, more than any other country.

3TC Solidarity Cup: AB de Villiers’ Eagles clinch gold, silver for Temba Bavuma’s Kites

0

[ad_1]

AB de Villiers once again showed why is regarded as one of the most destructive batsmen ever to play the game as his quickfire innings helped his team Eagles win the 3TC Solidarity Cup gold medal in Centurion on Saturday.

After Reeza Hendricks won the toss and elected to bat first, Kingfishers started brightly with their skipper and Janneman Malan putting on a 30-run partnership in the first three overs.

Hendricks was run-out courtesy of a fine fielding effort from Temba Bavuma. Faf du Plessis came in the middle and tried to put on a partnership with Malan, who was hitting well at the other end.

Malan’s 31 off 16 ensured Kingfishers ended their first part of the innings at 56/2 in 6 overs.

AB de Villiers’ Eagles were the next to bat with Kingfishers coming out to bowl. Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen opened the innings for Eagles and they got the team off to a cautious start.

After the completion of two overs, Eagles were at 16/1 as Glenton Stuurman clean bowled van der Dussen. AB de Villiers came out to bat but it was Markam who did the maximum damage for Eagles.

Markram smashed 43 off 21 deliveries while ABD could muster only 7 off 11 deliveries. Eagles finished their first part of the innings with 66/1 in 6 overs.

For Kites, Jon-Jon Smuts and Ryan Rickleton opened the innings against Eagles. The openers started steadily as they scored 17 runs from the first two overs.

Lungi Ngidi bowled the third over and he conceded 16 runs from it with Smuts taking the attack to the South African international.

Rickleton was dismissed LBW by Andile Phehlukwayo, however, Smuts kept going on the other end and helped Kites finish at 58/1 in six overs.

In the second half, Eagles were supposed to bat first, followed by Kites and then Kingfishers. The team with most number of runs (combined first and second) would win gold followed by silver and finally bronze medal.

De Villiers simply went berserk in the second half as he smashed a half-century off just 21 deliveries. He was finally dismissed by Kites’ Anrich Nortje for 61 (24 balls) but the damage was already done as ABD’s heroics ensured Eagles finished with 160/4 in their 12 overs over two halves.

Kites came out to bat, resuming their innings at 58/1. Bavuma and Smuts departed in quick succession as Kingfishers left them reeling at 76/3.

Dwaine Pretorius then smashed Tabraiz Shamsi for three sixes and two fours as Kites needed 44 off last two overs to be in gold position.

Stuurman conceded just 11 runs at Kites went into the last over, needing 33 runs to overhaul Eagles’ score. They, however, finished at 138/3 despite Pretorius slamming the fastest half-century of the match (17 balls).

Kingfishers came out to bat the last and they needed to score 139 for the silver medal and 161 to win the gold. du Plessis and Coetzee resumed the innings for them in the second half against the Eagles.

Du Plessis tore apart Ngidi in the eighth over as he smashed three sixes and a four to put his team on the right track in the chase.

Fortuin, however, ended du Plessis’ stay in the middle as he castled him for 28 (13 balls). Phehlukwayo then got rid of Klassen in the next over, and celebrated by showing the Black Lives Matter engraved on his inner t-shirt.

Ngidi bowled an economical last two over as Kingfishers ended their 12 overs at 113/5. This meant they had to settle for bronze, Kites won silver while Eagles took home the gold.

This company was fully remote with 1,300 employees long before coronavirus — here’s how they did it

0

[ad_1]

The founders of GitLab, Dmitriy Zaporozhets and Sid Sijbrandij

GitLab

Many companies have had a rough time adjusting as all their employees moved to working remotely.

That’s not the case for GitLab, one of the world’s top enterprise software start-ups. It has no offices. It’s been remote since its start in 2014.

So when the pandemic appeared, GitLab was prepared. Employees already had adequate spaces at home where they could work.

Like many other businesses, GitLab relies on virtual communication tools such as Slack and Zoom. Employees just use these tools in a very specific way.

They follow policies on picking the correct emojis to react to chat messages and allocating a certain number of minutes to wrap up video calls. Its website regularly posts and updates detailed instructions about how to onboard new employees, and a buddy system keeps new hires from getting overwhelmed. Many of the company’s activities are logged in GitLab’s own open-source software, which companies can use to manage their source code. In-person gatherings are rare.

“We’d get together once in a while with people living close by, and about once every 9-10 months with the whole company,” said Job van der Voort, a former product vice president at GitLab, in an email interview.

“Those moments were great to get to know other sides of people, but admittedly we already worked on that a lot through more casual Zoom calls, for example.”

Even though some employees have been taking care of their children on top of their existing responsibilities, productivity has shot up since Covid hit, GitLab co-founder and CEO Sid Sijbrandij told CNBC in an interview on Monday.

“After interviewing people, it seems they’re bored,” he said. “There’s not much else to do, so people tend to work more to counteract that.”

And this isn’t some small group. GitLab has over 1,300 employees, having raised $436 million from Goldman Sachs and other investors. Sijbrandij wants to make sure employees stay together and don’t feel overly isolated. There are new daily gratitude and mental health channels on Slack, and soon there will be a day when family members will be able to join internal Zoom calls.

“With kids at home, the kids are super curious,” he said.

GitLab employees sometimes hold themed social calls over Zoom.

GitLab

Transparency and an IPO date

One of GitLab’s six core values is transparency.

GitLab’s organizational chart is public. Its infrastructure and marketing proposals are public. And employees are constantly consulting and updating a publicly accessible handbook for all manner of the company’s operations. There’s a history of past versions of documents that reveal who said what. The idea is to make things that anyone inside GitLab can review at their convenience. That makes it less important to attend every video call, for instance.

Van der Voort, whose start-up simplifies the process of hiring employees in many countries, liked the strategy of having everything be open by default while he was at GitLab. He thinks it’s a requirement for a totally remote companies. “It makes it so you don’t run into the ‘who can give me permission to see this thing?’ issue, and gives trust and ownership to all employees,” he wrote.

One of the most significant pages in GitLab’s handbook addresses the company’s strategy around going public. In 2015, when it was still a small start-up, GitLab disclosed that it intended to go public on Wednesday, November 18, 2020. The specificity surprised people. It showed outsiders the company meant business. For employees, it meant that even though they could work from home, they would have to be serious about building and selling products that many people would be willing to pay for.

Then the coronavirus emerged. In March the World Health Organization declared it a pandemic, and businesses the world over switched to functioning remotely as GitLab had done for years. Stock indexes fell as the economy contracted, and people lost their jobs at technology companies and in other industries. Some GitLab customers delayed purchases or reduced their orders.

With the odds of pulling off a successful market debut in 2020 looking less certain, employees began asking Sijbrandij about GitLab’s own stated IPO plan, Murph said.

On May 13, GitLab’s head of investor relations, Tony Righetti, who previously ran investor relations at application monitoring software company New Relic, made a change to GitLab’s handbook. The IPO timing details were removed.

“We continue to believe that being a public company is an integral part of realizing our mission,” the new language said. “As a public company, GitLab would benefit from enhanced brand awareness, access to capital, shareholder liquidity, autonomy, and transparency. That said, the strength of our business model enables us latitude in selecting a favorable public offering environment and not be beholden to a specific date. In order to maintain the flexibility discussed in this section, we have chosen to remove the dates previously targeted for these goals.”

While it might look like the company hid significant information from the public, Murph said that by changing it, GitLab was, in fact, being transparent. GitLab’s commitment to transparency, and its use of software that logs all adjustments, makes it possible to see who tweaked the IPO language and when.

For Sijbrandij, the target had served its purpose for GitLab. It grew to over $100 million in annualized recurring revenue.

“Today we have enough revenue to go public,” he said. The company hired people like Righetti who know how public companies operate, and it became clear that having an IPO date was not a great idea. So the date went away.

GitLab hasn’t given up on its goal of being publicly traded, though, despite having no offices.

“We will go out when we and the markets are ready. We will not give you a heads up, just like every other company,” said Sijbrandij.

Valtteri Bottas beats Lewis Hamilton as Mercedes make one-two finish in final Hungarian GP practice

0

[ad_1]

Formula One championship leader Valtteri Bottas saw off six-time champion Lewis Hamilton as Mercedes made a one-two finish in the final practice session of the Hungarian Grand Prix on Saturday.

Finnish driver Bottas, who clocked the best time of one minute and 15.437 seconds on a cloudy Saturday morning at the Hungaroring, was 0.42 quicker than his Mercedes team-mate Hamilton.

Mexican driver Sergio Perez of Racing Point–who finished the race 0.161 seconds behind Hamilton–was third quickest in the final practice session in Hungary.

Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari and Lance Stroll of Racing Point finished at the fourth and fifth positions, respectively on a track which was left slippery due to an oil and cement dust left behind from a previous Formula Three race.

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen, who began at pole position in Hungary last year, made a sixth-place finish in the practice session.

Hamilton will look to equal Ferrari great Michael Schumacher`s all-time F1 record of eight Hungarian Grand Prix titles when he heads into the race on Sunday.

The British driver is currently six points behind his Mercedes teammate Bottas, who is standing at the top of the standings after winning season-opener in Austria and finishing second to Lewis Hamilton in the Styrian Grand Prix.

If your iPhone feels slow or dies fast, you may need a new battery — here’s how to check

0

[ad_1]

iPhone SE

Todd Haselton | CNBC

If your iPhone feels like it runs a bit slower than it used to, or if you notice that the battery life doesn’t seem to be as good as when you bought it, it may be time to replace it.

That’s because the batteries in the gadgets we use get slowly worse as they age. Apple‘s iPhone software tries to compensate for this: If your phone shuts off unexpectedly, it can will slow your phone down to preserve battery life and try to prevent unexpected shutdowns, which are an annoying surprise for most people.

But a better solution is to replace the battery entirely.

There’s a way to quickly check if your phone is slowing itself down, which means you should probably send it in (or take it to an Apple Store if one around you is open) to get a new battery.

Here’s what to do.

How to check your iPhone battery health

Checking the health of my iPhone battery using iOS 11.3

Todd Haselton | CNBC

  • Open Settings on your iPhone.
  • Choose Battery.
  • Tap “Battery Health'”

Now you’ll see the “Maximum Capacity.” The lower it is, the less battery life you’ll get. Apple’s battery site says a “normal battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity” and that a one-year warranty includes service if your battery is defective.

But a one-year old iPhone should generally be fine.

My iPhone 11 Pro Max bought in September (not quite a year ago) has a 96% maximum capacity right now. You may want a replacement if you see your peak performance capacity around 80% or lower, though.

Next, check the next area down the page. If it says “Peak Performance Capability,” that means your iPhone is running at full speed and you’re probably OK.

But if it says “Performance management applied,” that means your iPhone experienced at least one unexpected shut-down due to battery life, and Apple’s software is now throttling performance to prevent that from happening again.

You can turn this off to get your iPhone running at peak speed by tapping “disable” at the end of the warning message, but the best option is to replace your battery instead.

You may also want to replace your battery if it says “Performance management turned off,”  “Battery health unknown” or “Battery health degraded.”

How to replace your battery

You might see this option if your battery is aging.

[ad_1]

Rain continued to play spoilsport as the entire first session on the third day of second #raisethebat Test between England and West Indies was washed out at Old Trafford in Manchester on Saturday.

Not even a single delivery could be bowled in the session as rain forced players to stay inside their respective dressing rooms.

There was no change in the overnight scoreboard as West Indies still trail by 437 runs in the first innings. The visitors had lost the wicket of John Campbell before stumps on Day 2 and they remain at 32/1 with Kraigg Brathwaite and night watchman Alzarri Joseph in the middle.

This after all-rounder Ben Stokes and batsman Dominic Sibley slammed respective centuries and put on a mammoth 260-run stand, before the hosts declared for 469/9.

Brief Scores: West Indies 32/1 (Joseph 14*; Curran 1/8) vs England 469/9 (Stokes 176, Sibley 120; Chase 5/172)

Former India batsman Aakash Chopra on Saturday picked Ben Stokes as the number one all-rounder in the world across all three formats of cricket.

His remark came as Stokes scored a century in the second Test against West Indies to put England in a strong position.

“At this point of time, there is no doubt in my mind that Ben Stokes is the number one all-rounder in the world across all three formats. He has an average of 43 in Tests, 59 in ODIs over the last two years,” Aakash Chopra said on his Youtube channel.

“He has a good bowling average across all formats as well, there is no doubt that Stokes is the number one all-rounder in the world across all formats,” he added.

The former India batsman highlighted how Stokes has been a match-winner in all three formats of the game for England.

Chopra picked Shakib-al-Hasan and Ravindra Jadeja as the number two and three all-rounders in the world at the current point of time.

29-year-old Stokes smashed his 10th Test century and second against West Indies on day two of the second Test.

The all-rounder scored 176 runs in 356 balls registering his longest innings in terms of balls faced. It was also the second time that Stokes had scored more than 150 runs in the longest format of the game.

Stokes had played a knock of 84 runs in the finals of the 2019 World Cup to take England to their first-ever 50-over World Cup win.

Then in the same year, he also produced a match-winning knock in the third Test of the Ashes to take England to an improbable one-wicket victory.

England pacer Jofra Archer fined for breaching bio-secure protocols

[ad_1]

England fast bowler Jofra Archer has been fined an undisclosed amount besides also receiving a written warning for breaching the side’s bio-secure protocols recently following the opening Test against the West Indies.

The players of the England Test team travelled to Manchester in separate cars following the conclusion of their four-wicket defeat against West Indies in the first Test at Hampshire’s Rose Bowl on Monday.

The England cricketers were asked not to take any break in the 230-mile journey except for the use of a designated biosecure county ground for lunch and pre-approved petrol stations.

However, Archer broke the rules by making an unauthorised visit to his flat in Hove en route to Manchester.

Following the breach, the England management had excluded Archer from the ongoing second Test of the three-match series against the Caribbean side.

Now, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said that Archer has now been fined and given warning following a displinary hearing, chaired by Managing Director Ashley Giles and included Archer’s agent and a representative from the Professional Cricketers’ Association, on Friday.

“Archer was withdrawn from England’s second Test squad against West Indies at Emirates Old Trafford and is commencing five days of isolation at the venue. He will undergo two COVID-19 tests in this period, which have to test negative before his self-isolation period is lifted. He is due to rejoin the rest of the squad on Tuesday 21 July,” the official statement from the ECB said.

This means, Archer will be available for selection for the third and final Test against West Indies, beginning July 24 at Old Trafford in Manchester.

HDFC Bank’s Q1FY21 net profit rises by 19.6% to Rs 6,658.6 crore | Companies News

0

[ad_1]

Mumbai: The HDFC Bank on Saturday (July 18, 2020) said that its net profit rose to Rs 6,658.6 crore for the quarter ended on June 30, 2020, which is an increase of 19.6% over the quarter ended June 30, 2019.

The Bank’s net revenues (net interest income plus other income) grew to Rs 19,740.7 crore for the Q1FY21 from Rs 18,264.5 for the quarter ended June 30, 2019.

The Net interest income (interest earned less interest expended) for the quarter ended June 30, 2020, grew by 17.8% to Rs 15,665.4 crore from Rs 13,294.3 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2019, driven by growth in advances of 20.9%, and growth in deposits of 24.6%.

The net interest margin for the quarter was at 4.3%.

HDFC said that the continued slowdown in economic activity has led to a decrease in retail loan origination, sale of third party products, use of credit and debit cards by customers, efficiency in collection efforts and waivers of certain fees. The decrease resulted in fees/other income lowering by approximately Rs 2,000 crore.

Other income (non-interest revenue) at Rs 4,075.3 crore was 20.6% of the net revenues for the quarter ended June 30, 2020, as compared to Rs 4,970.3 crore in the corresponding quarter ended June 30, 2019.

Provisions and contingencies for the Q1FY21 were Rs 3,891.5 crore as against Rs 2,613.7 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2019. Total provisions for the current quarter included contingent provisions of approximately Rs 1,000 crore.

The Core Credit Cost ratio was 1.08%, as compared to 0.77% in the quarter ending March 31, 2020, and 1.07% in the quarter ending June 30, 2019

Operating expenses for the quarter were Rs 6,911.5 crore, a decrease of 2.9% over Rs 7,117.3 crore during the corresponding quarter of 2019.

The cost-to-income ratio for the quarter was at 35.0% as against 39.0% on June 30, 2019.

“Operating expenses were lower primarily due to lower loan origination and sales volumes,” said HDFC.

Pre-provision Operating Profit at ₹ 12,829.3 crore increased by 15.1% over the corresponding quarter in 2019.

HDFC stated that their Profit before tax for the quarter ended June 30, 2020, was at ₹ 8,937.8 crore.
