NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha on Friday rejected a resolution which sought creation of a special fund for modernisation of madrassas in view of educational and social backwardness of Muslims, especially women. WCD minister Smriti Irani urged the House to unanimously reject the resolution saying this “casts aspersions of inequality” and “reduces it to a slur on basis of religion”.
The House could transact business only for a brief period during the second half when it took up Private Members’ Bills after two adjournments in the day.
The resolution regarding the need to implement the recommendations of the Sachar Committee to help madrasas to modernise, and enact legislation for Prevention of Atrocities Act against Minorities was introduced by Indian Union Muslim League member Abdul Wahab in the Upper House on February 10.
“ The resolution says women in the Muslim community are not given an equal opportunity to get educated. I would like to highlight here that after three decades, India now has a new NEP… A new India that is envisaged cannot be broken down on the basis of religion. And that’s why, through you, I would request the House to unanimously reject this resolution,” said Irani.
The resolution was rejected by a voice vote amid a walkout staged by Congress and other opposition parties.
