4-1-8-5: 18-year-old Lucy Hamilton becomes youngest to take 5-wicket haul in WBBL
Brisbane Heat’s Lucy Hamilton made history after becoming the youngest bowler in the history of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) to take a five-wicket haul. At the age of 18 years and 193 days, the speedster achieved the feat while playing against Melbourne Stars on Sunday, November 17, at the Drummoyne Oval in Sydney.
Hamilton finished with figures of 4-1-8-5 and won the Player of the Match award after the Heat beat the Stars by six wickets. On the back of her stupendous spell, the Heat bowled the Stars out for 138. Hamilton got the wickets of Yastika Bhatia, Annabel Sutherland, Meg Lanning, Tess Flintoff and Deepti Sharma.
The Heat chased down the target with 15 balls left in their innings. Jemimah Rodrigues scored 45 runs off 31 balls with five fours and two sixes before Sutherland dismissed her. Interestingly, Hamilton did not take a single wicket in her first seven matches in the WBBL since making her debut back in 2022.
With the win, the Heat moved to third in the table with 10 points and a net run rate of 0.200 thanks to victories in five out of eight matches. After going on a three-match losing streak, the Heat has won three games on the trot. If they win their next game, they could well go to the top of the table.
Hamilton also recorded the best figures by a Heat bowler in the history of the WBBL. He went past Jemma Barsby’s 2-0-2-4 against Sydney Thunder back in January 2018. The teenager also registered the fourth-best figures in WBBL history. Megan Schutt holds the record with figures of 3.3-0-19-6 and is the only bowler with a six-wicket haul in the tournament.
Amanda-Jade Wellington holds the second and third spots with five-wicket hauls against the Heat and Melbourne Renegades.
