David Warner questions Cricket Australia over lifetime leadership ban: Something that’s hard to get my head around

David Warner has questioned Cricket Australia over the lifetime leadership ban that was imposed on him six years ago. Back in March 2018, CA handed Warner the suspension after he was involved in the infamous ball-tampering scandal in the Newlands Test against South Africa where Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft were also found guilty.

Warner returned to playing for Australia in 2019, but his ban from captaining the national team remained. However, the southpaw is eligible to coach the national team in the future. The veteran termed the leadership ban as ‘bizarre’.

“What’s the difference between captaining and coaching? You’ve got more responsibility as a coach, wouldn’t you think so? I don’t know, I’m not sure, I don’t know how to answer,” Warner was quoted as saying to Code Sports.

“It’s been five years, and I still don’t know how to answer the question. It’s just something that’s hard to get my head around. Apparently, I will be able to coach if allowed to in Australia. But I can’t captain. So yeah, I’m not sure what it is. It’s under contract with Australia. It’s a leadership position, so I’m not sure; I just don’t know. It’s very bizarre,” he added.

Warner recently played his farewell Test against Pakistan at the Sydney Cricket Ground where he bowed out with a spectacular half-century in the second innings. Warner also retired from ODIs, although he talked about making a return if Australia need his services for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Warner will continue to play T20Is for Australia and is likely to take part in the T20 World Cup to be held in thr West Indies and United States of America (USA).

Warner is currently in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where he is playing for the Dubai Capitals (DC) in the International League T20.
