MS Dhoni to continue playing for CSK? IPL brings back uncapped player rule for 2025
CSK’s beloved ‘Thala’ MS Dhoni is likely to come back for one more season as the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council has brought back uncapped players rule for the next season. While unveiling the player regulations for the upcoming IPL 2025 on Saturday, October 28, the governing council revealed that they’re re-introducing the uncapped players rule which they scrapped in the 2021.
As per the rule, any capped India cricketer, who hasn’t played international cricket in the preceding five years from the year of the upcoming season, will classify as uncapped player. Furthermore, if a player doesn’t have a BCCI central contract he will also be termed an uncapped player.
Hence, the rule will allow CSK to retain MS Dhoni for the price of an uncapped Player ie INR 4 Crore. As per the new player regulations, each team can retain a maximum of six players which can include five capped players and two uncapped players.
It will take a massive burden away from their auction purse of INR 120 Crore and the legendary player can continue to be the heartbeat of the franchise for a few more seasons. The 43-year-old has been playing for the ‘yellow army’ since the inception of the tournament and has led them to join record five IPL titles in the years 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023.
MS Dhoni to have his last hurran is 2025?
Ever since 2023, there have been widespread discussions around Dhoni’s retirement from the T20 extravaganza. However, the legendary wicketkeeper batter returned in the 2024 season to pay back the love his fans had showered on him throughout the 2023 season.
Unfortunately, the Captain Cool couldn’t end the 2024 season on a high as CSK crashed out in the league stages following a loss against RCB in their last fixture as Dhoni failed to take them over the line. Following his dismissal, the Ranchi-born cricketer looked extremely angry as he walked off the pitch.
With the uncapped player rule back, fans would hope that Dhoni comes back for one more season and retires on a high with another IPL trophy in his hand.
