Australia pacer Josh Hazlewood suffered a fresh injury during Day 4 of the ongoing Gabba Test on Tuesday, December 17. Hazlewood ended bowling just one over on the day and proceeded to leave the field after that with Cricket Australia confirming that the pacer had picked up a niggle.

Hazlewood had missed the second Test in Adelaide due to a side strain and had returned to the team ahead of the match at the Gabba. The pacer had bowled 5 overs on Day 3, where he picked up the all-important wicket of Virat Kohli to put Australia in command of things. Hazlewood bowled the 27th over and looked shaky from the get-go. The very first ball from the pacer was way outside off stump and KL Rahul, who looked in good knick, would send it to the boundary.

The next delivery saw Rahul take a single to rotate the strike with Ravindra Jadeja. Hazlewood looked to be in genuine distress as he was able to complete the over before going off the field. Cricket.com.au reported that Hazlewood was suffering from calf awareness and the pacer would undergo medical scans to determine the extent of his injury.

The statement also put Hazlewood in doubt to bowl again in this innings.

“An Australian team spokesperson said he was suffering from “calf awareness” with the fast bowler set to undergo medical scans to determine the extent of the injury.”

“It puts him in doubt to be able to bowl again in this innings,” read the statement.

Hazlewood so far in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25

In the 2 matches Hazlewood has played so far, the pacer has been in fine form as he has taken 6 wickets in 3 innings with an average of 13.17. Scott Boland was used in the Adelaide Test as Hazlewood missed the match and could be a candidate to return at the MCG if the latter doesn’t recover in time.
