Watch: James Vince's shot hurts seagull during Big Bash League fixture
England and Sydney Sixers batter James Vince hit a seagull during Match 28 of the Big Bash League 2024-25 against Melbourne Stars on Thursday, January 9 at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne. In the second innings of the match, Vince hit Joe Paris straight down the ground on the fifth ball of the tenth over as the ball ended up landing straight on a seagull near the boundary.
The ball rolled over for a four, leaving the bird severely hurt as it lay on the ground fluttering its wings. The ground staff immediately took away the bird for some treatment as even Vince was seen being concerned for the creature.
Watch the incident here:
Coming back to the match, Vince went on to score a brilliant 53 (44) with the help of six fours and top scored for Sydney Sixers in the chase of 157. He got involved in crucial partnerships of 34 (32) with Kurtis Patterson (18 off 18) and Moises Henriques (13 off 11) of 40 (30) for the second and third wickets respectively.
Melbourne Stars win by 16 runs
However, the game turned on its head as after Marcus Stoinis removed both Vince and Henriques in the space of three deliveries. Their wickets derailed Sixers’ chase with only Hayden Kerr (21 off 15) showing some resistance lower down the order, but it wasn’t enough to take his team over the line. As a result, Sixers were restricted to 140/9 in 20 overs and lost the match by 16 runs.
Mark Steketee was the pick of the bowlers for Melbourne with figures of 3/14 in 3 overs. Earlier in the day, after being put in to bat first, Melbourne were reduced to 60/4 in 9.3 overs. Their innings was rescued by Beau Webster (48 off 41) and Glenn Maxwell (58* off 32) who got involved in a massive 88-run stand off 54 balls.
Courtesy of their knocks, Melbourne posted a good score of 156/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Sean Abbott was the pick of the bowlers for Sydney with figures of 3/29 in four overs. Maxwell was adjudged Player of the Match for scoring a half-century and taking two catches.
