Scottish athlete wins medal, celebrates with 100-year-old grandpa at Commonwealth Games

Scotland’s Megan Keith produced one of the most heartwarming moments of the Commonwealth Games after winning the bronze medal in the women’s 5000m on Thursday, celebrating the achievement with her 100-year-old grandfather in the stands.

Moments after crossing the finish line, Keith ran towards the spectators before embracing her grandfather, who has been one of the biggest supporters throughout her athletics journey. Keith, competing in front of her home crowd in Glasgow, clocked a season-best 14:49.10 to finish third in the race. Australia’s Rose Davies won the gold medal with a season-best time of 14:44.53, while compatriot Jessica Hull claimed silver in 14:45.01.

The Scottish runner was cheered on by family members throughout the event, and her first reaction after securing a place on the podium was to celebrate with them rather than head for television interviews or the mixed zone. The hug with her grandfather became one of the standout moments of the day, drawing widespread attention online.

The medal marked a memorable achievement for Keith, who delivered a season-best performance on one of the biggest stages of her career in front of a packed home crowd.

India’s Parul Chaudhary, meanwhile, endured a disappointing race, finishing 13th in 15:08.56. The 31-year-old, whose personal and season best stands at 15:04.26, was unable to challenge the leading pack and finished outside the top 10.

The result extended India’s wait for its first Commonwealth Games medal in the women’s 5000m. Earlier in the Games, Parul had also missed out on a podium finish in her preferred event, the women’s 3000m steeplechase.

Parul came into the Commonwealth Games in good form after breaking the national record with a time of 15:04.26 while finishing second at the Meeting Nikaia in Nice, France, last month. However, she was unable to replicate that performance in Glasgow.

Keith’s bronze medal and the emotional celebration with her centenarian grandfather ended up becoming one of the most talked-about moments from the athletics competition, with videos of the reunion widely shared across social media.
