Rafael Nadal can’t keep calm after Alexandra Eala seals historic DC Open title
Alexandra Eala capped a dream week at the Mubadala DC Open with a historic title and an emotional tribute from Rafael Nadal, the tennis legend whose academy played a pivotal role in shaping her career. Moments after the Filipina became the first player from her country to win a WTA Tour-level singles title, Nadal took to social media to congratulate his former student.
“Congratulations, @AlexEala05! What an incredible week in Washington! A well-deserved trophy for all the hard work. Congratulations to the Philippines and to the entire Rafael Nadal Academy team!” Nadal wrote, celebrating the success of one of the academy’s brightest graduates.
Eala secured the biggest title of her career with a stunning 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 comeback victory over top seed Jessica Pegula. After losing the opening set, the 21-year-old won the final eight games to script a memorable triumph.
Eala looked out of sorts on Sunday, trailing 4-6, 1-2 when rain halted play. But when the final resumed on Monday, she returned with renewed energy and turned the match on its head.

Eala joined the Rafael Nadal Academy in Mallorca as a teenager and graduated in 2023 after spending several years training under its high-performance programme. During her time there, she refined her aggressive left-handed game, strengthened her physical fitness and developed the mental toughness required to compete at the highest level, laying the foundation for her rise on the WTA Tour.
Her Washington title run highlighted just how far she has progressed. Eala defeated an exceptional field featuring Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen, defending champion Leylah Fernandez, second seed Elina Svitolina and four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka before overcoming world No.3 Pegula in the final.
The victory is the latest milestone in a breakthrough season for the Filipina. Earlier this year, she reached the fourth round at Wimbledon after stunning defending champion Iga Swiatek, proving she could challenge the sport’s biggest names on the grandest stages. Her triumph in Washington has now propelled her into the WTA top 20, further cementing her status as one of the brightest young talents in women’s tennis.
