SL vs IND: Gary Kirsten breaks silence on Galle reunion with old pal Gautam Gambhir
The reunion between Gary Kirsten and Gautam Gambhir in Galle was always bound to draw attention. Kirsten famously coached Gambhir during India’s historic 2011 World Cup-winning campaign, but this time the pair found themselves in opposing camps, Kirsten leading Sri Lanka and Gambhir at the helm for India.
Following India’s commanding 165-run victory in the series opener, Kirsten revealed that their post-match exchange was not spent taking a trip down memory lane. Instead, the two head coaches focused on the modern realities of international coaching and their shared philosophy on the longest format of the game.
SL vs IND, 1st Test Day 5: Highlights | Report
“We didn’t do much reminiscing; we actually spoke about coaching and the challenges of coaching, and we both have strong values around Test cricket,” Kirsten stated during the post-match press conference. “So we had a good conversation around that, obviously trying to help our players play the best cricket they can in both countries. We have very similar ideas about how we want our teams to play Test cricket.”
India’s clinical performance provided the backdrop for the conversation. Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar delivered a sensational 10-wicket match haul, while Devdutt Padikkal’s sublime 167 in the first innings set the foundation for dominance. India sealed the 165-run win on Day 5 to take a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series, picking up 12 vital World Test Championship points along the way.
WHAT DID KIRSTEN AND GAMBHIR DISCUSS?
Kirsten emphasised that their discussion centred on the high-pressure environment of international coaching and their shared blueprint for Test cricket. The former South African opener highlighted that both he and Gambhir hold deeply rooted principles regarding red-ball cricket, driven by a desire to see their sides play a positive, competitive brand of the game.
Their exchange offered a clear window into the deep mutual respect that remains between them, even whilst directing strategy from opposing dugouts.
Gambhir has frequently acknowledged the profound influence Kirsten had on his development as a cricketer. Their reunion in Galle marked a full-circle moment, with Kirsten taking charge of Sri Lanka on a two-year contract earlier this year, and Gambhir assuming the Indian head coach role in July 2024.
KIRSTEN BACKS GAMBHIR
Even before the series began, Kirsten publicly defended his former pupil at a time when the Indian coach was facing intense media scrutiny following a string of difficult Test results for India.
Pointing to Gambhir’s stellar credentials across formats, Kirsten expressed unwavering confidence in his capabilities: “He has won a T20 World Cup and the ICC Champions Trophy. He’s also had success in the IPL—his record speaks for itself. I really enjoyed working with him when he was a player. He’s a smart cricketer, and I knew he’d have success as a coach.”
