Bayern Munich says boss Vincent Kompany stable after collapsing in training
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany is set to undergo further medical examinations after collapsing while watching a reserve-team training session on Friday. The German club confirmed on Saturday that doctors are continuing to investigate the cause of the incident.
Bayern’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, said the 40-year-old’s condition was stable but added that the medical team was working to establish what led to his collapse. Eberl also revealed that he had spoken to Kompany and his wife following the incident.
“The tests have already yielded some results, but further results are needed to determine exactly what it is and how long it will take for him to recover,” Eberl said.
The Belgian has been battling a viral infection since last week, with assistant coach Aaron Danks previously indicating that the illness had affected his legs.
Kompany’s health concerns had already disrupted his routine in recent days. He watched Bayern’s 6-1 victory over Leipzig from a seated position before missing a training session and a pre-match press conference on Tuesday. Danks explained at the time that the manager needed to recover at home.
Despite the illness, Kompany returned to the touchline for Bayern’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday. After the match, he admitted that he had attempted to continue working despite his condition and had ignored the warning signs from his body.
However, his collapse two days later has raised further concerns about his recovery. Eberl said there was no clear indication yet of when Kompany would be able to resume his duties, adding that his absence could potentially last several weeks.
“He’ll only come back when he’s fit,” Eberl said. “We’re not going to start setting any time frames. We need to find out what the issue is, and then it’s a question of what the recovery time will be. We’re not talking in terms of days, but weeks.”
Bayern will face Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, October 25.
