Here are 10 points you need to know about the Vikas Dubey case:

1) Gangster Vikas Dubey was arrested on Thursday in Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh after he gave the cops a slip earlier. He was identified and arrested when he was on his way to Ujjain’s Mahakal temple. The gangster from Kanpur was absconding for nearly a week.

2) A massive manhunt was initiated to capture Vikas Dubey, a history-sheeter facing 60 criminal cases, after eight Uttar Pradesh police personnel — including a deputy superintendent of police — were killed in an ambush on the wee hours of July 3. The cops were ambushed in Dikru village where they had gone to arrest the wanted criminal. Some cops were injured in the encounter as well.

3) As soon as the police team was about to reach the hideout of Dubey, bullets were showered on them from a nearby building’s rooftop. Cops then said that the notorious criminal may have gotten news about the raid earlier and was prepared to ambush cops. It may be noted that Vikas Dubey and his henchmen put up massive roadblocks to prevent the police personnel from proceeding towards their hideout.

4) The incident sparked national outrage and opposition leaders questioned Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath about the state’s law and order situation. Soon after, over 25 UP police teams were deployed to look for Vikas Dubey. Police also confirmed that a surveillance team was scanning over 500 mobiles phones and added that efforts were on in full swing to retrieve information on Dubey’s whereabouts.

5) An initial cash reward of Rs 50,000 — later increased to Rs 5 lakh — was also announced. Police also raided Dubey’s house in Krishnanagar area of Lucknow. The station officer of Chaubeypur police station was also suspended over suspicion that he had tipped off Vikas Dubey about the police raid. Chaubeypur Station Officer (SHO) Vinay Tiwari was grilled by the Special Task Force (STF) following the incident. Later, it came to light that Tewari had directly called the lineman and instructed him to cut off the power supply to Kanpur’s Bikhru village to shield cops from firing during the ambush.

6) A few days after the encounter, many facts started to emerge which confirmed that Dubey was tipped off by police personnel about the aide. His main aide Dayashankar Agnihotri was also arrested. It also came to light that Dubey had a bunker in his house in Kanpur’s Bithoor area and used to store weapons and explosives there.

7) After SHO Vinay Tiwari, three other police personnel were suspended for suspected links with Vikas Dubey. Kanpur police also arrested Vikas Dubey’s daughter-in-law, neighbour and maid for being an accomplice to Dubey during the encounter. The three were identified as Shama, Suresh Verma and Rekha respectively. According to cops, the three were hand-in-glove with Dubey and his henchmen when the shootout occurred at the criminal’s residence in Bikru village of Kanpur Dehat.

8) On July 7, it came to light that around 200 cops came under the scanner over the sensational Kanpur encounter that turned into an ambush against the police team resulting in the killings of 8 policemen. India Today TV reported that police personnel at Chaubeypur police station along with several other stations in thr area were on the radar of investigators. 10 police constables were also suspended. It may be noted that the 200 policemen being probed are from Chaubeypur, Bilhaur, Kakwan and Shivrajpur police stations. Mobile call records of all these personnel were investigated.

9) On July 8, India Today TV reported that the Kanpur gangster again gave the slip to UP police as he fled a hotel in Faridabad before cops arrived. According to police sources, Vikas Dubey, responsible for the murder of eight policemen, was hiding in a hotel on the Delhi-Mathura highway. He was allegedly staying at a hotel in Faridabad’s Badhkal Chowk area. When an STF team received information about his whereabouts they raided the hotel but he had already fled the scene by then.

10) Dubey, who is also accused of killing BJP”s Santosh Shukla in 2001 inside the Shivli police station, was finally arrested today after a massive manhunt and three encounters. Three aides of Dubey were killed in encounters before he was nabbed in Madhya Pradesh today. High drama unfolded at the Mahakal temple during the gangster’s arrest. “Main Vikas Dubey hun, Kanpur wala (I am Vikas Dubey from Kanpur],” screamed the Uttar Pradesh gangster before his arrest.
