NEW DELHI: India on Thursday reiterated that the remarks on Prophet Muhammad by two BJP functionaries didn’t indicate the views of the government even as Iran deleted its readout of the foreign minister’s meeting in which it had said that NSA Ajit Doval had promised strong action against the culprits.
In the middle of the Arab unrest over the remarks against Prophet Muhammad by two BJP functionaries, one of whom has been expelled and the other suspended, India on Thursday reiterated the comments didn’t indicate in any way the views of the government.
Significantly, Iran deleted its readout of foreign minister Amir Hossein Amir-Abdollahian’s meeting with NSA Ajit Doval in which it had said that the issue was raised with India and that Doval had assured Tehran of strong action against the culprits. “We have made it pretty clear that tweets and comments do not reflect views of government,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said at a media briefing.

“This has been conveyed to our interlocutors as also the fact that action has been taken by the concerned quarters against those who made the comments and tweets. I really do not have anything additional to say on this,” he said.
Asked about Iran’s statement on the meeting with Doval, Bagchi said, “My understanding is that what you are referring to in a readout has been pulled down.”
Iran’s state media though continued to report the contents of the readout.
