NEW DELHI: The indigenous Tejas fighters have now been deployed for a multi-nation exercise abroad for the first time, underlining the IAF’s growing confidence in the single-engine jets.
The Desert Flag-VIII exercise, at the Al Dhafra air base in United Arab Emirates from February 27 to March 17, will also witness the participation of air forces of the US, UK, Australia, France, Kuwait, Bahrain, Morocco, Spain and South Korea.
The IAF contingent of five Tejas fighters — two C-17 Globemaster-III strategic airlift planes and 110 personnel — have arrived at the UAE airbase. “This is the first occasion when the Tejas shall participate in an international flying exercise,” Wing Commander Ashish Moghe said. “The aim is to participate in diverse fighter engagements and learn from the best practice,” he said.
The exercise comes soon after Malaysia selected South Korean FA-50 fighter over the Tejas for a $920 million deal for importing 18 light attack aircraft. Defence PSU Hindustan Aeronautics, however, is in talks with countries like Argentina and Egypt to export the fighter.
