A year on, Rs 15 lakh for kin of 4 killed in Leh firing
SRINAGAR: Ladakh lieutenant governor VK Saxena announced Sunday Rs 15 lakh compensation for the next of kin of each of the four protesters killed in police firing during violent protests in Leh on Sept 24 last year.The firing left around 90 protesters wounded as demonstrations demanding statehood and constitutional safeguards under Schedule Six for the Union territory turned violent. “An ex gratia of Rs 3 lakh for those with major injuries and Rs 1 lakh for minor injuries has also been approved,” Saxena said.

The LG thanked Union home minister Amit Shah for his “sensitive, humanitarian and guiding approach”, saying he had “always stood in solidarity with the victims and their families”.Leh Apex Body co-chairperson Chering Dorjay Lakrook had repeatedly sought compensation for victims during meetings with the home ministry. After a Sept 9 meeting this year, Ladakh groups said Centre had assured them it would withdraw cases against those arrested during last year’s protests and provide compensation to victims and wounded protesters.Authorities imposed curfew-like restrictions in Leh after the violence, suspended mobile internet and arrested more than 80 people. FIRs were registered against 87, including activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was charged under NSA and kept in Jodhpur jail until March this year.
