Abishek Porel denied bail in rape case, sent to judicial custody for 14 days
Bengal and Delhi Capitals cricketer Abishek Porel was on Friday, August 14, denied bail and remanded to judicial custody for 14 days by the Chinsurah Court. Mogra Police arrested Porel following a complaint alleging sexual relations under the pretext of marriage and misconduct. He was first produced in court on August 11 and sent to three days of police custody.
The 23-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, a regular for Bengal and IPL franchise Delhi Capitals, has been under investigation since June 23. On that day, a young woman studying medicine in Karnataka lodged a complaint at the Mogra Police Station against him.
Sources said the two had been in a relationship for three and a half years, had planned to marry, and had even travelled abroad together. About 18 months ago, a dispute between them led to police involvement, though no FIR was filed then.
Police visited Porel’s Chandannagar residence multiple times but could not trace him. The complainant later moved to the Calcutta High Court, which directed Mogra Police to arrest him immediately.
Following the High Court order, Porel was arrested in Kolkata and a case was registered under multiple sections. After his initial police remand ended, he was produced in court again today and sent to judicial custody till the next hearing.
