Amorim’s United show grit and glimpses of change in Premier League opener vs Arsenal
It was a mixed start for Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United as they fell 0-1 to Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday. Many would argue United were unlucky not to take at least a point. Unlike last season, when structure was often missing, this performance showed greater discipline, intensity, and a glimpse of the vision Amorim is trying to bring.
United dictated the tempo for long spells, and while there are reasons for optimism, there is still work to be done before the club can get back to consistent winning ways.
Negatives
Altay Bayindir: Usually regarded as United’s second-choice goalkeeper, the Turkish international looked far from convincing. Pressure comes with the role, and a starting keeper is expected to remain composed in key moments. At set-pieces, especially corners, Bayindir seemed unprepared to cope with the demands of wearing the United shirt. If United are serious about building under Amorim, strengthening the goalkeeping department might need to be a priority.
Diogo Dalot: The full-back has been at United for some time, but questions remain about his standout qualities. He often looks average in most areas of his game. While he made a few charging runs into the box, his decision-making in the final third was poor, lacking both precision in passing and positional awareness. Compared to Patrick Dorgu, who offers a more adventurous threat going forward, Dalot remains limited in impact.
Positives
Matheus Cunha: The Brazilian looked silky on the ball and posed a threat both on the flanks and through the middle. His versatility is a major asset for United, and he backed it up with hard work off the ball as well. For a debut Premier League game, Cunha showed moments of real quality, and once he develops better chemistry with his teammates, there should be much more to come.
Bryan Mbeumo: The Cameroonian kept Arsenal’s defenders guessing, constantly probing with his runs into the box. While his influence was limited by the lack of overlapping support from United’s wing-backs, his directness was still effective. If paired with someone like Amad in future lineups, his link-up play could become even more dangerous. Overall, it was a strong first Premier League outing for him in a United shirt.
What’s next?
One of the biggest questions for fans is how Benjamin Sesko will be integrated into the team. His appearance against Arsenal was uneventful, but once fully fit and ready to start, Amorim will be expected to unlock the best of the Slovenian striker. Sesko’s adaptation could prove crucial in shaping United’s attacking identity this season.
