Andriy Lunin continues with Real Madrid: Pens long-term contract extension

Ukrainian goalkeeper Andriy Lunin has surprised many by signing a long-term contract extension with Real Madrid, committing his future to the club until June 30, 2030. The announcement was made by the club after Lunin inked the new deal alongside president Florentino Pérez.

Lunin, who arrived at Real Madrid in 2018 at just 19 years of age, has been part of the first-team set-up since 2020. During his time in the famous white shirt, he has won an impressive 10 trophies: 2 Champions Leagues, 1 Club World Cup, 2 European Super Cups, 2 LaLiga titles, 1 Copa del Rey, and 2 Spanish Super Cups.

“I’m very happy to be at the best club in the world for a few more years. From day one, the club made me feel at home. I feel very comfortable, and happy to be in the best place for my professional and personal development,” Lunin told Real Madrid TV.

“I always try to improve in every way and to keep working hard but I still have a long way to go. The 2023/24 season was the one in which I played the most games and won three titles. It was unforgettable, important and a reward for the work done. I enjoy every day here,” Lunin added.

The new contract follows Lunin’s outstanding 2023-2024 season, where he stepped up in the absence of first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who was sidelined for most of the season due to injury. Lunin’s performances were so consistent that despite Real Madrid signing Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan from Chelsea, he became the preferred option in both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League under coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Lunin played a crucial role in Real Madrid’s success during the campaign, helping the team secure triumphs in both La Liga and UEFA Champions League, which also earned him a nomination for the Yashin Award for best goalkeeper. However, he missed out on playing in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund due to illness, with Courtois returning to take his place.

Although Courtois has since fully recovered, limiting Lunin’s opportunities this season, his decision to commit to Real Madrid long-term has quashed rumors of a potential transfer. Lunin’s future at Real Madrid remains promising, as he continues to fight for game time and contribute to the club’s ongoing success.
