Another Balakot? Karachi blackout leads to Twitter chatter about IAF attack

Late Tuesday night, panic and fear gripped Pakistan over social media buzz that fighter jets of the Indian Air Force had once again crossed the Line of Control (LOC) and were hovering over the Karachi sky.

As per these social media users in Pakistan, the IAF jets flying over Karachi led to a “blackout” in the city.

With the blackout in Karachi and growing fear, many took to Twitter to talk about what they thought was a repeat of the Balakot airstrikes carried out by the IAF last year. Some said on Twitter that the authorities put Karachi under blackout after IAF fighters were seen flying near the city.

“I definitely saw jet planes live near the airport. What’s up,” said Laraib Mohib from Karachi. “There were a lot of fighter jets flying around in Karachi probably,” added another Karachi resident.

Waj Khan, a journalist in Pakistan, also tweeted, “Dear @IndianPakistan, rumors are rife about Indian Air Force incursions into Pakistan-administered Kashmir and the Sindh-Rajasthan sector. Recommend you put out a statement to clarify. Also, recommend that everybody chill and enjoy the week.”

Some clarified that the jets were in fact of the Pakistan Air Force and added that the IAF fighters were near the border in Rajasthan. Sharing a video, a user by the name Salman Manzoor, wrote, “PAF Fighter jet “JF17 Thunder ” & Mirage” patrolling over Karachi and boarder areas of Sindh after formation of Cowards Indian jets was identified near LOC (Sindh, Pakistan).”

“It’s not #Indianairforce jets in fact it was #PakistanAirForce jets violating #indian airspace near #Rajasthan border(sic),” said another.

While Pakistan Armed Forces are yet to issue an official statement over rumours and clarify if the Pakistanis mistook PAF aircrafts for IAF aircraft, a Twitter account ‘Pakistan Strategic Forum’ tweeted, “Sleep tight, PAF is awake.”
