PUNE: Nearly 16% of the districts and 24% of the population in India have high to very high vulnerability to cold waves, IMD’s Climate Hazards and Vulnerability Atlas of India for the 13 most hazardous meteorological events has shown.
Among the high to very high vulnerable states and Union territories (UTs) to cold waves in the decreasing order of the number of prone districts are: Uttar Pradesh (75), Rajasthan (17), Bihar (14), Jharkhand (1), and Punjab (1).
The highest percentage of population and districts in India have high to very high vulnerability to drought, cold waves, and wind hazards, the atlas showed. Pulak Guhathakurta, head of the climate research division at the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune, said the 13 most hazardous meteorological events are: cold and heat waves, flood, lightning, snowfall, dust storm, hailstorm, thunderstorm, fog, strong winds, extreme rainfall, drought, and cyclone.
These cause significant loss of life, injury or other health impacts, property damage, loss of livelihoods and environmental damage.
The Atlas stated that nearly 8% of the districts and 7% of the population in India have moderate to very high vulnerability to fog on an annual basis, while 2% districts and their populations show high to very high vulnerability.
“In December, most of the districts of Delhi, a few districts of Uttar Pradesh; in January, most of the districts of Delhi, many districts of Uttar Pradesh and Tripura, and a few districts of Haryana, West Bengal, and Manipur are most vulnerable to fog,” Guhathakurta told TOI. Many lives are lost each year worldwide from accident owing to fog conditions on the highways.
“Atlas and its maps can be very useful to local and state agencies in terms of taking specific measures for public health and administration, if they have an idea about the most vulnerable districts to a particular disaster,” Guhathakurta said.
Madhya Pradesh has the maximum districts (19) vulnerable to drought.
Nearly 2% of districts in India with an equal percentage of population also have high to very high vulnerability to duststorms.
