Ball did not hit the stumps: Puzzled Stokes hunts explaination after controversial DRS dismissal of Zak Crawley

England collapsed to an embarrassing defeat on Day 4 of the third Test match in Rajkot in the 5-match series against India. England were bowled out for just 122 runs in the final innings of the game, handing India a massive win by 434 runs.

England’s collapse in the second innings began right at the top after openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett were dismissed early. Both Duckett and Crawley left inside the first 9 overs with just 18 runs on board. The in-form English openers looked rattled while chasing a daunting 557-run target. While Duckett was run-out, Crawley’s dismissal on Sunday, 18 February was quite controversial.

IND vs ENG, 3rd Test scorecard

Crawley was trapped in front of the wickets against an inswinger from Jasprit Bumrah. Umpire Joel Wilson called Crawley out on the field and the batter did not hesitate to send the decision upstairs.

During the replay, the DRS showed that the delivery was just missing the edge of the leg stump, however, DRS indicated that the on-field umpire should stick with his call.

England captain Ben Stokes was left puzzled by the decision and revealed that he had a long chat with match referee Jeff Crowe about the same. Speaking to TalkSport, Stokes sounded frustrated and said that the ball had not hit Zak’s stumps, hinting that he was not happy with DRS decision.

“Yeah, just about Zak’s DRS. He was just giving us some information around how it was judged to be given out when the balls did not hit the stumps on the DRS. The ball did not hit the stumps on replay. It was apparently that numbers said that it hit the stump, but the image was wrong. So I don’t really understand what’s going on there.

The England captain was asked about his thoughts on the DRS call. Stokes said that if the match officials were saying that something had gone wrong, then that should be it.

“I think the people in charge of it saying that something’s gone wrong, I guess that is enough for itself,” Stokes concluded.

The England captain had hit out at DRS in the Vizag Test match as well. In that game Crawley had been trapped in front of the stumps by Kuldeep Yadav. The replays showed that all three stumps were visible while Crawley was batting against Kuldeep, but the ball somehow still managed to go and hit the stumps.

“Technology in the game is there. It can never be 100%, which is why we have the umpire’s call. When it’s not 100% as everyone says, I don’t think it’s unfair for someone to say ‘I think the technology has got it wrong on this occasion.’ That is my opinion.”But in a game full of ifs, buts and maybes, I am not going to say that the reason why we haven’t got the result we wanted. I’m just saying technology has gone wrong on this occasion, and I think that’s fair to say,” Stokes had said earlier in the series.
