South Africa batter Kyle Verreynne has called his hundred in the ongoing first Test against Bangladesh as the best one of his career so far. Notably, the wicketkeeper batter played a magnificent innings of 114 (144) with the help of eight fours and two sixes on Day 2 of the Test at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka.

Verreynne’s knock helped Bangladesh take a massive lead of 202 runs in the first innings after they bundled out Bangladesh for just 106 in first innings. Commenting on his knock after the end of the day’s play, the 27-year-old called it the best innings of his Test career and mentioned that that it came under the toughest conditions he’s ever batted under in terms of heat and humidity.

“It is definitely the best innings of my Test career. It is probably the toughest conditions I have played under in terms of heat and humidity. Back home we don’t face long periods of spin bowling. Around 90% of that innings was just against spin. Things happen quickly. You don’t have much time to reset from a concentration point of view. This was certainly my most rewarding innings,” Verreynne in the post-day press conference.

Further speaking ahead, he picked his second hundred over his maiden ton scored in New Zealand in 2022 and hoped that it will also end up in a winning cause like his first one.

It has been a long time since the one in NZ, so it is nice to get in another one: Verreynne

“This (century) felt like better just in terms of the context of the game and the conditions. I think New Zealand is a lot similar to our conditions back home. To do in the continent in quite a tough wicket and tough circumstances, it is probably a better innings. The impact will hopefully be bigger than the first (century). I am really happy with it. It has been a long time since the one in NZ, so it is nice to get in another one,” he added.

Verreynne became the first wicketkeeper batter from his nation to score a Test hundred in Bangladesh and third to score a hundred in Asia. He got involved in a massive 119-run stand for the seventh wicket with Wiaan Mulder who himself brought up his maiden Test fifty (54). He also added 66 runs for the ninth wicket with Dane Piedt helping South Africa score 308 in their first innings.

Meanwhile, in the second innings, Bangladesh once again got off to a disastrous start as Kagiso Rabada dismissed Shadman Islam (1) and Mominul Haque (0) in his second over leaving the hosts reeling at 4/2. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto tried to stabilize the innings with his 55-run stand with Mahmudul Hasan Joy but was dismissed lbw by Keshav Maharaj for 23. Bangladesh were 101/3 after 27 overs at stumps on Day 3 with Mushfiqur Rahim (31) and Mahmudul Hasan Joy (38) at the crease.
