Bangladesh missed a trick by holding back Shakib Al Hasan: Tamim Iqbal

Tamim Iqbal said that Bangladesh made a mistake by holding back Shakib Al Hasan on Day 1 of their opening Test against India. On Thursday, Shakib was introduced into the attack as late as in the 53rd over when Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja got their eyes in. Shakib came into the Test after his five-wicket haul against Somerset in the County Championship, but looked out of sorts against India.

After the first day, Shakib had figures of 8-0-50-0 and his economy rate of 6.12 was the worst amongst all the six bowlers that Bangladesh used. Tamim said that the Tigers should have used Shakib earlier to take more advantage of the damp conditions at the Chepauk.

“Bangladesh missed a trick as Shakib should have bowled earlier when the ball was newer. The wicket was damp and he would have got some assistance. In my opinion, he came too late,” Tamim told the broadcasters.

Ashwin and Jadeja took the attack to Shakib right from the word go, hitting him for fours and sixes. Leaking 21 runs in his first two overs, the Magura-born Shakib was put under pressure from the outset.

Hasan Mahmud shines

After opting to field first, Bangladesh made early inroads into the Indian batting lineup. Hasan Mahmud dismissed Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant to take the Tigers off to a flying start. With India at 339 for six, the visiting team was well on top.

Nahid Rana and Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked up the wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul respectively. Thereafter, Ashwin and Jadeja put on an unbeaten partnership of 195 runs for the seventh wicket. From being in a commanding position, the Tigers have found themselves in some sort of strife.
