Sunil Gavaskar said that the IPL 2026 final should have been moved to the reserve day on Monday, June 1, after the Gujarat Titans arrived in Ahmedabad after a travel delay. GT’s flight from Mullanpur to Ahmedabad was delayed due to adverse weather conditions.

Shubman Gill and Co. were supposed to reach Ahmedabad by early afternoon, but were left stranded due to the weather conditions. GT landed in Ahmedabad late on Saturday at around 10:45 pm and ended up reaching their team hotel around midnight. In contrast, RCB have been in the city since beating Gujarat in the Qualifier 1 on Tuesday, May 26.

This meant that the defending champions got more rest in their tank, as GT had to face RR in Qualifier 2 and pull off a tense chase. Speaking to India Today exclusively, Gavaskar said that the travel delay would have severely hampered Gujarat’s preparations for the final.

The Indian legend said with the reserve day in place, the BCCI should have been fair to GT and postponed the game to Monday.

“Yes, definitely. Make no mistake, players require rest. You didn’t know when your flight was taking off, so there was anxiousness. Which means you are mentally also off apart from the physical toll.

“So, I thought with a reserve day in place, considering what happened was completely unexpected, I thought they could have pushed the final to tomorrow, just to be a little fair to the Gujarat Titans team,” he said.

GT HAVE BEATEN RCB IN AHMEDABAD THIS SEASON

Gujarat will be buoyed by the fact that they have already beaten RCB this season in Ahmedabad. GT won the match by four wickets after a disciplined bowling performance helped restrict the defending champions to 155.

GT won the match by four wickets. But RCB does have the edge with their wins in Bengaluru and Dharamsala.
