Ben Shelton and the new wave reshaping American tennis

Ben Shelton had Frances Tiafoe across the net. Serena Williams was watching from the stands. Arthur Ashe Stadium was packed, loud and unmistakably American.

By the end of Friday night, Shelton had done something American men’s tennis had been waiting 23 years to see.

The 23-year-old defeated Tiafoe 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 to reach his first Grand Slam final at the US Open. He will face top seed Alexander Zverev on Sunday, with the chance to become the first American man since Andy Roddick in 2003 to win a major singles title.

For Shelton, it was a breakthrough. For American tennis, it felt like another piece of a much larger puzzle falling into place.

A NIGHT LOADED WITH HISTORY

This was only the third all-American men’s singles semi-final at a Grand Slam this century. Tiafoe and Shelton had already reached three major semi-finals each, more than any other active American man. Now Shelton has gone one step further.

He is also the youngest American US Open men’s finalist since Roddick, who was 21 when he won the title in 2003.

The names watching from Arthur Ashe Stadium only added to the occasion. Serena Williams, Stan Smith, Lindsay Davenport and Kim Clijsters were among the tennis legends in attendance.

For Tiafoe, the significance was particularly personal.

In 2020, after receiving the ATP’s Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award, Tiafoe wrote a letter to Ashe about his childhood in College Park, Maryland. His parents had emigrated from Sierra Leone, while his father worked as a janitor at a tennis facility.

Tiafoe recalled that, as a 16-year-old, simply walking into Arthur Ashe Stadium would have been a dream.

Six years later, he was walking onto that court for a Grand Slam semi-final against another Black American man.

He lost. But the bigger story was the generation that had arrived.

RODDICK’S DROUGHT TO SHELTON’S BREAKTHROUGH

American men’s tennis has spent years looking for its next major champion.

Roddick’s 2003 US Open title remains the last Grand Slam singles triumph by an American man. Players such as John Isner and Sam Querrey enjoyed long and successful careers, while Taylor Fritz eventually broke through to the US Open final in 2024.

But the title remained out of reach.

Then came Tiafoe.

His run to the 2022 US Open semi-finals announced that an American man could once again make a deep run at home. Shelton followed with his own semi-final appearance in 2023. Fritz reached the final in 2024. Shelton reached the Australian Open semi-finals in 2025.

Now Shelton is a Grand Slam finalist.

The progression is difficult to dismiss as coincidence.

Shelton has already reached three major semi-finals, and among players born in the 2000s, only Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have reached the stage more often. This season, he has won four titles and will play his fifth final in New York.

He also arrived at the semi-final after one of the biggest wins of his career, beating defending champion Alcaraz in a five-set quarter-final that ended at 3:33 a.m.

The American is no longer simply a prospect.

He is now playing for a Grand Slam title.

THE WILLIAMS LEGACY LIVES ON

Yet any conversation about the revival of American tennis has to include the women.

For more than two decades, Venus and Serena Williams were the centre of the American tennis universe. They did not merely win Grand Slam titles. They changed the visibility of the sport and broadened the idea of what an American tennis champion could look like.

Serena’s 23 Grand Slam singles titles and Venus’ seven remain an extraordinary part of American sporting history.

Their era is over, but the legacy has not disappeared.

Coco Gauff has already won the US Open, lifting the trophy in 2023 at just 19. Madison Keys has also become a Grand Slam champion, while Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro have established themselves among the leading American players.

Gauff’s own run in New York ended in the semi-finals this year, but her presence at the top of the game is evidence that American women’s tennis has successfully moved into another generation.

And Serena herself was back at the US Open this year, sharing Arthur Ashe Stadium with the generation that followed her.

The symbolism was almost too perfect.

IS THIS AN AMERICAN TENNIS RENAISSANCE

That is where caution is necessary.

American tennis has depth. It has stars. It has young players coming through. But it does not yet have dominance.

Shelton still has to beat Zverev to end the men’s Grand Slam drought. Tiafoe has been to the US Open semi-finals three times without reaching the final. Fritz has reached a major final but is still waiting for his first Grand Slam title.

And international tennis remains extremely strong.

So perhaps “renaissance” is too grand a word for now.

But the nature of the question has changed.

For years, American tennis was searching for one player who could carry the weight of its history. After Roddick, there was always another successor being discussed.

Now there are several.

Fritz has reached a Grand Slam final. Tiafoe and Shelton have become regular major semi-finalists. Alex Michelsen and Learner Tien represent another generation coming through. On the women’s side, Gauff and Keys have already converted promise into Grand Slam titles.

That may be the most encouraging development of all.

American tennis may not have found another Serena Williams or Andy Roddick.

It may have found something different.

A generation.

And on Friday night, that generation produced its newest milestone. Tiafoe and Shelton shared the biggest court in American tennis. One walked away disappointed. The other walked away with a chance to end a 23-year wait.

Now Shelton has one more match to win.

If he does, the conversation changes completely.

If he doesn’t, the American resurgence will still have another chapter to write.

Either way, American tennis is no longer waiting for its future to arrive.

It has started to look like the future is already here.
