PATNA: In one of the biggest hauls, the sleuths of Vigilance Investigation Bureau on Saturday recovered ‘unaccounted cash’ of crores of rupees during searches conducted in connection with a disproportionate asset (DA) case against an executive engineer of rural works department Sanjay Kumar Rai.
The FIR has been registered against Rai on Friday under section 13 (2) and 13 (1) (B) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, after receiving information about bribes from junior engineers and cashiers.
A special vigilance court issued the search warrant, following which the raid was conducted for several hours by separate teams at his residences in Patna and Kishanganj and his office. Searches were also conducted at the residences of Rai’s clerk Khuram Sultan and his associate Om Prakash Rai.
In the course of verification, the team has detected that the executive engineer has acquired assets in excess of his legitimate sources of income. According to Sujit Sagar, DSP Vigilance, Patna, around Rs 3.02 crore have been recovered from his associate’s rented accommodation in Gram Jokhi in Kishanganj district. A diary containing the accounts relating to the transaction of bribe was also found. A note counting machine has been installed due to the recovery of the huge amount of cash.
The senior officials said the raiding team has unearthed cash of Rs 1.33 crore, ornaments worth Rs 16.7 lakh and documents related to Rai’s bank accounts and lockers from his residence located at Patna’s Basant Vihar Colony near RPS School Road. They have also seized documents of a flat that he purchased at Jagdeo Path in Patna.
Another raiding team has recovered Rs 61,000 cash and bank documents from Rai’s rented flat in Ruidhasa locality in Kishanganj. The team has also unearthed Rs 16 lakh in cash, 13 branded watch, and an accounts dairy from Khuram’s rented accommodation in Line Mohalla, Kishanganj.
“During the search of Khuram’s two flats in Indirapuri (road number 10), Patna, the officers found Rs 80 lakh in cash, gold, silver and diamond jewelry worth Rs 17 lakh and papers related to bank accounts, fixed deposits, lockers and investments. Total Rs 5.32 crore in cash has been recovered so far,” read the official statement issued by the vigilance investigation bureau.
The tainted officer has bought four plots in his wife Usha Rai’s name including one in Baily road which worth Rs 28.7 lakh, and two in Patna city worth Rs 40 lakh and Ras 18.75 lakh respectively, and one plot in Purnia, whose estimated value is Rs 29.1 lakh. He also brought one plot for his daughter Jaya Rai in Purnia, which costs Rs 14.18 lakh and one plot is registered on his name, which worth Rs 45.9 lakh in Patna City. Rai has deposited Rs 49 lakh in his various bank accounts.
