NEW DELHI: BJP central team staged a sit-in at Rampur after being stopped from visiting restive Sandeshkhali in Bengal on Friday.
The 6-member BJP delegation, formed by the national president JP Nadda, was stopped from visiting Sandeshkhali where women have been protesting against alleged atrocities by local TMC leaders.
Annapurna Devi, a Union minister and a member of the delegation, said, “We are here to meet the victims and to give justice to them.Today, the way police are standing here with promptness to stop us if this promptness was shown to arrest Sheikh Shahjahan and his goons, then this situation would not arise.”
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the leader of the Congress party in Lok Sabha and president of the state unit, will also visit the unrest-hit Sandeshkali later in the day.
Numerous women in Sandeshkhali have accused Shajahan Sheikh, a prominent figure in the Trinamool Congress, and his supporters of engaging in “land-grab and sexual assault” using coercion.
Shajahan has been on the run since a mob, reportedly associated with him, attacked officials from the Enforcement Directorate during a search of his premises related to a ration scam on January 5.
The Trinamool Congress downplayed the significance of these visits, saying that such political trips are intended to “disrupt the situation.”
