NEW DELHI: Considering them to be first-time offenders, a Delhi court on Monday granted bail to Niraj Bishnoi, accused in ‘Bulli Bai‘ app case, and co-accused Omkareshwar Thakur, who is creator of ‘Sulli Deals’ app, on humanitarian grounds.
It said that continued incarceration would be detrimental to their overall well-being.
Bishnoi (20), a second-year BTech student, was arrested by Delhi Police Special Cell’s Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations unit from his home state, Assam, on January 6 and Thakur was nabbed on January 9.
Delhi Police had said that during interrogation, Bishnoi had disclosed that the app was developed in November 2021 and updated in December. He had also allegedly created a Twitter account to talk about the app.
Six people have been arrested in the Bulli Bai app Sulli Deals cases, which pertains to listing of photos of 100-plus prominent Muslim women on GitHub platform that hosted the app for auctioning on January 1. The site was blocked after the matter got sensitive.
The first arrest in the case was Vishal Kumar Jha (21), a second year civil engineering student, from Bengaluru, made on January 4. Next was Shweta Singh (18), a junior college student from Uttarakhand, followed by Mayank Rawat (21), a second year BTech student, also caught from Uttarakhand on January 5. Neeraj Singh (28) a postgraduate in business administration from Odisha, was the sixth accused arrested on January 21.
Meanwhile, Mumbai’s cyber police filed a chargesheet before the Bandra court earlier this month. Rashmi Karandikar, DCP (cyber-Mumbai), confirmed the over 1,400-page chargesheet had been filed with supporting technical evidence. The cyber police started the probe following a complaint filed by a 34-year-old social worker from Andheri (E).
