NEW DELHI: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge‘s statement on BJP‘s 400+ seat target in the coming Lok Sabha elections led to some lighthearded moments in the Rajya Sabha, eliciting laughter from even Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Speaking during the Budget Session in the upper house, Kharge quipped that BJP has a majority in the Lok Sabha with 330-334 seats and this time, “400 paar” is being said everywhere.

The statement evoked laughter in the upper house, with PM Modi also joining in.
The X handle of BJP shared a short clip of Kharge’s statement with a cheeky caption: “PM Modi be like, ‘I need new haters, the old ones have become my fans…'”.
Amid the laughter, Kharge went on to take a dig at BJP members in the House: “Let them [BJP] secure the first position. Those present here clapping have come with the ‘kripa’ (blessing) of PM Modi.”
Union minister Piyush Goyal also interjected, applauding Kharge’s comments. “Kharge ji spoke the truth,” he added.
Later, Kharge, who was clearly being sarcastic, said that BJP won’t even surpass 100 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, adding that “INDIA is strong.”
Piyush Goyal again stood up in between and said that “daily one of the INDIA bloc member is leaving the alliance. We don’t know whether the INDI alliance exists or not.”
The BJP has set an ambitious target of winning 400+ seats in the coming Lok Sabha elections. It even coined a new slogan, “Abki Baar, 400 Baar”, a rehash of its pre-2014 election slogan of “Abki Baar, Modi Sarkar”.
