NEW DELHI: More than 450 Omicron cases have been detected across 18 states and Union territories in India so far.
Amid rising Covid cases linked to Omicron, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said individual alertness and discipline are a big strength of the country in the fight against the Omircron variant.
Meanwhile, India has reported 6,987 fresh Covid-19 cases and 162 deaths in the last 24 hours.
The country’s active caseload currently stands at 76,766, the lowest since March 2020.
Here are the latest developments:
MP reports its first Omicron cases
Madhya Pradesh reported its first cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus on Sunday with state Home Minister Narottam Mishra saying that eight foreign returnees were found infected with the new strain in Indore, of whom six have already been discharged after recovery.
Around 3,000 people returned to Indore from abroad recently and 26 of them were found to be infected with coronavirus.
“Omicron was confirmed in the genome sequencing of eight of these people,” he said.
Himachal Pradesh reports its first Omicron case
Himachal Pradesh reported its first case of Omicron on Sunday in Mandi district, an official here said.
The latest coronavirus variant was found in a 45-year-old asymptomatic woman, who was tested positive for Covid-19 on December 12.
Her RT-PCR test was conducted at the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital here.
A resident of Lower Khaliar in Mandi, the woman had arrived in India from Canada on December 3 and was home isolated for 14 days, state Health Secretary Amitabh Avasthi said.
For now, Covaxin likely to be only Covid vaccine available for children of 15-18 yrs
Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin is likely to be the only Covid-19 vaccine available, for now, for children in the age group of 15-18 years, who will be inoculated from January 3, official sources said.
Also, healthcare and frontline workers and citizens above 60 years of age with comorbidities would be administered the third dose of the same vaccine they had been given before.
“Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin is the only Covid-19 vaccine which will be administered, for now, to children in the age group of 15-18 years who will be inoculated from January 3. The estimated population to be covered in this category is seven to eight crores,” an official source said.
Night curfew in Delhi from Monday
As Delhi continues to witness a rise in the number of COVID-19 cases, a night curfew has been imposed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led government in the national capital from Monday.
The curfew will be imposed from 11 pm to 5 am.
Meanwhile, Delhi has witnessed 290 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, which is the highest number of cases recorded since June 10.
Night curfew in Karnataka from December 28 for ten days
The Karnataka government has decided to impose a night curfew from December 28 from 10 pm to 5 am for ten days.
Addressing a press conference here today, Karnataka Health Minister K Sudhakar said, “A statewide night curfew will be imposed from December 28 from 10 pm to 5 am for ten days. New Year celebrations at pubs, restaurants and hotels are banned. Section 144 will be imposed in the state from December 28.”
Sudhakar added, “Only 50 per cent seating arrangements are allowed in hotels.”
Kerala reports 19 new Omicron cases, tally at 57
With 19 new cases of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in Kerala, the tally of a new variant in the state has reached 57, the health minister Veena George on Sunday.
The health minister said that of the 19 cases detected, 11 were detected in Ernakulam, six in Thiruvananthapuram and one each in Thrissur and Kannur.
Meanwhile, Kerala reports 1,824 fresh infections, 16 deaths and 3,364 recoveries in the last 24 hours. There are 22,691 active cases in the state.
