Less than three weeks after Indian shooting legend Jaspal Rana’s untimely death, his family has suffered another tragedy with the passing of his mother, Shyama Devi, following prolonged health complications and hospitalisation.

Shyama Devi died on Sunday – a day that would have marked Jaspal’s 50th birthday – deepening the grief for the Rana family, which has been mourning the loss of one of Indian shooting’s most influential figures.

Jaspal died on June 12 after suffering cardiac complications. The former shooter and celebrated coach had undergone an emergency heart procedure days earlier but could not recover.

Confirming the development, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed condolences to the family in a statement.

“We have received the extremely sorrowful news of the passing of Smt. Narayan Singh Rana Ji’s wife and the revered mother of renowned Indian shooter and Padma Shri awardee Late Jaspal Rana Ji,” Dhami said.

“In this hour of grief, my deepest condolences are with the bereaved family. May the departed soul attain peace and may the family find strength to bear this loss.”

SURVIVED BY HUSBAND NARAYAN RANA

Shyama Devi’s death comes as another devastating blow for Jaspal’s father, Narayan Singh Rana, who had been grieving the loss of his son.

Jaspal is survived by his wife Reena Rana, daughter Devanshi, son Yuvraj and siblings Sushma Singh and Subhash Rana.

Widely regarded as one of India’s greatest pistol shooters, Jaspal enjoyed a decorated competitive career before making a successful transition into coaching. He played a key role in shaping the next generation of Indian shooters and was serving as India’s high-performance coach for pistol shooting at the time of his death.

One of the defining moments of his competitive career came at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, where he won three gold medals and a silver while equalling the then world record.

Before his death, Jaspal had returned with the Indian contingent from the ISSF World Cup in Munich and was hospitalised in New Delhi after developing complications that later required an emergency cardiac procedure.
