'Desperate' for comeback, Glenn Maxwell not hurt by Test snub vs Sri Lanka

Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell said that he completely understands the reasoning behind the selectors not picking him for the upcoming two-Test tour of Sri Lanka. Maxwell was left out of Australia’s 16-member squad for the tour as the selectors showed faith in uncapped all-rounder Cooper Conolly.

The all-rounder, who last played Test cricket against Bangladesh in September 2017, said that though he wanted to be a part of the team, he was completely understanding of the selectors’ call. The 36-year-old mentioned that the selectors might’ve been looking to test new players in the Asian conditions.

“It’s just selection. There’s always going to be people wanting to be there and I made no secret that I desperately wanted to be on that tour, but I can completely understand their reasoning. The fact that they’re already in the World Test Championship final, they’ve got a couple of Tests in Sri Lanka and there’s going to be some sub-continent tours over the next few years, so they get to look a few new guys in those conditions,” Maxwell was quoted as saying by Fox Sports.

Further speaking ahead, Maxwell denied making any future plans for his Test career as of now.

“What an experience for those guys to go over there – Cooper Connolly on his first Test tour – I certainly would’ve made the same decision as they have. I am not making any future plans right now, I’m looking forward to a week off and then Sunday (the Stars’ last home and away game),” he added.

In the seven Test matches played in his career so far, Maxwell has scored 339 runs from seven matches at an average of 26.07 with one hundred to his name. Meanwhile, he has been in sensational form in the Big Bash League 2024-25, having won back-to-back Player of the Match awards for Melbourne Stars.

The spin all-rounder scored an unbeaten 58* (32) against Sydney Sixers with the help of five fours and three sixes. He further played a scintillating knock of 90 (52) against Melbourne Renegades smashing four fours and ten sixes. Under his leadership, Stars have won four matches on the trot and are ranked fourth on the points table.
