Devajit Saikia delighted to carry forward work done by Jay Shah as BCCI Secretary

Newly elected BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) Secretary Devajit Saikia is delighted to carry forward work done by his predecessor Jay Shah. Saikia was appointed as the new Secretary of the board on Sunday, January 12 during a meeting which was also attended by President Roger Binny and Vice President Rajeev Shukla.
Following his appointment, Saikia expressed his gratitude to all his colleagues and former Secretary Jay Shah. The Secretary position was left vacant for a little over one month after Shah assumed his role as the Chairman of the ICC (International Cricket Council) in December 2024.
“I am extremely delighted and grateful to all my colleagues. I thank the ICC Chairman and former BCCI Secretary Jay Shah…I will carry forward the work done by ICC Chairman and former BCCI Secretary Jay Shah,” Devajit Saikia told reporters.
Saikia is a former Assam cricketer, who played four first class matches in his career and scored 53 runs. As a wicketkeeper, he also inflicted nine dismissals, including eight catches and one stumping. After his cricketing days, Saikia transitioned into a career in law.
Saikia attends his first meeting as BCCI Secretary
He began practicing as a lawyer at the age of 28 in the Gauhati High Court. Prior to his legal career, he had also secured jobs in the Northern Frontier Railways and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) through sports quotas. He began his career in cricket administration in 2016 as he joined Assam Cricket Association (ACA) as one of the six presidents.
Saikia’s first task as the BCCI secretary was to attend the performance review meeting of the Indian team in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia alongside other board members.
Sources told India Today that captain Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir attended the meeting. A source close to the development said that the meeting had a lengthy and detailed discussion on India’s current slump in Test cricket.
