European Super League could start next season: Barcelona president Joan Laporta

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has suggested that the European Super League could start as early as next season, while adding that he believes 15 clubs are open to joining the competition, regardless of English clubs’ participation.

However, he also hinted at the possibility of abandoning the project if it doesn’t materialize soon. The Court of Justice of the European Union gave a ruling in December that UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, and FIFA, its global counterpart, violated EU law by obstructing 12 clubs from establishing a Super League.

“Roma reiterates that it does not support any project related to the so-called Super League,” said the Italian side in a statement given to AFP. Marseille and Feyenoord also denied any interest.

Despite this, clubs and leagues united in criticism of the project, reaffirming their commitment to UEFA-run competitions. Barca, alongside their rivals Real Madrid, remain the sole supporters of the Super League venture.

“The Super League could start next season, or it will be in 2025-26, and if not, I will rethink everything,” Laporta told Catalan radio station RAC1.

“The European Cup started in 1955 with very few clubs and later became the top competition in Europe. I imagine a first phase like this, and [more clubs] then integrating.”

Manchester United were amongst the 12 clubs that initiated the Super League in April 2021 but withdrew following pressure from fans, governments, and players.

The other five Premier League clubs involved were Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur, all of whom also withdrew. In response, the Premier League announced that any future attempt to form a similar league would result in a 30-point deduction for the clubs involved, coupled with a £25 million ($32 million) fine for each breakaway attempt.

“Whether or not the English come, I don’t care. They already have a Super League with the Premier League,” Laporta said.
