Liverpool handed Arsenal a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium, knocking the Gunners out of the third round of the 2023/24 FA Cup.

Arsenal were presented with the first chance of the game when Martin Odegaard was played in Reiss Nelson in the 11 minute. However, the Norwegian midfielder hammered a powerful shot against the crossbar.

On the cusp of half-time, Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold rifled a strong shot which goal-keeper Aaron Ramsdale tipped to the cross bar to keep the scores level.

However, the deadlock was broken in the second half with Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior heading a header off an Alexander-Arnold corner into his own net to hand the visitors the lead.

In the dying minutes of the game, the Gunners pushed several players up in Liverpool’s half which back-fired when Diogo Jota found space behind their defence and release Diaz, who danced around the Arsenal defenders before firing a shot in the top corner.

Speaking after the win, Alexander-Arnold said they changed things at half-time and reaped the rewards in the second half. With this win, Liverpool advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

“We changed things around at halftime internally, and we came out and played football and created chances. There were times in the first half that we were a little bit naive … We hit the woodwork a couple of times, so we’ve had our chances, and towards the end, we put them away,” said Alexander-Arnold.

Liverpool will now face Fulham in their next match in the Premier League on January 11.

Meanwhile, Arsenal will take on London-rivals Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, January 20.
