NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad resigned as chairman of the party’s newly constituted Jammu and Kashmir campaign committee just hours after he was appointed to the post by party president Sonia Gandhi.
Sources in the party said that Azad refused to assume the post due to health reasons but conveyed his thanks to the leadership for giving him the responsibility.
Earlier in the day, the party had replaced Ghulam Mir Azad with Vikar Rasool Wani, a loyalist of Ghulam Nabi Azad, as the party’s president for the region.
The Congress high command had also approved the setting up of a political affairs committee, coordination committee, manifesto committee, publicity and publication committee, disciplinary committee, and pradesh election committee of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee.
There are reports that former MLA Mohd Amin Bhat has resigned from the Coordination Committee.
Jammu and Kashmir has been under Governor’s rule since 2018 after the BJP pulled out of the Mufti-led PDP-BJP coalition government.
