BAREILLY: The special MP/MLA court in Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district on Saturday found senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan guilty in a 2019 hate speech case.
The court of additional chief judicial magistrate Shobhit Bansal awarded him two years in jail along with Rs 1,000 fine.
The case pertains to Azam Khan’s speech in a party rally during the campaigning for Lok Sabha elections in which he made remarks against Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Aditya Nath, the Election Commission and the then Rampur DM.
Khan was booked under sections 171g (false statement in connection with an election), 505-1 (statement conducing to public mischief) of IPC along with section 125 of the Representation of People Act 1951
Divulging details about the case, prosecuting counsel Amarnath Tiwari said, “Azam Khan had delivered a hate speech on April 8, 2019 in Dhamora area of Shahjadnagar while addressing a public rally. He had said that the chief minister was a murderer and the officials wanted to kill him. He used objectionable remarks against the Election Commission of India. An FIR, in this case, was registered on the complaint of the video team in charge Anil Kumar Chauhan”.
Senior prosecuting Officer Shiv Prakash Pandey told TOI, “The MP/MLA court has found Azam Khan guilty. A total of 11 witnesses were produced in the court by the prosecution. The judge has sentenced Azam to two years along with Rs 1,000 fine”.
