If Sanju Samson does this, he'll never fail: Gavaskar on India star's batting approach

Sunil Gavaskar was happy to see Sanju Samson play conservatively at the start before hammering Afghanistan in the second T20I in Delhi. Samson scored 57 off 22 balls to help India secure the seven-wicket win, but his start was rather measured.

After failing in the first match of the series, the Indian wicketkeeper was cautious to begin his knock and was on 8 off 12 balls at one point. Once he was able to get the confidence needed, Samson quickly took apart the Afghanistan bowling and raced to his fifty in just 20 balls.

He finished with a strike rate of 259.09, better than Abhishek Sharma, who scored 39 off 19 balls.

Speaking to the broadcasters, Gavaskar said that all Samson needs is consistency when it comes to his batting. The Indian legend felt that if Samson continues with this approach when the chase isn’t a big one, then he will never fail in his pursuit to find consistency and will score a lot of runs.

“It’s sometimes the consistency that you want and because the openers get most of the strike in a 20-over game, they have the most opportunities to score. Sometimes, like today, he played himself in and he started hammering the balls only later. If he keeps on doing that, I don’t think he’ll ever fail. He’ll keep on getting 50s and 60s every time,” said Gavaskar.

Gavaskar also said that Samson does tend to fail to score runs when he tries to hit the ball out of the park from the get-go.

“It’s only when he looks to try and go bang-bang from the first ball, and then you have to do that if you’re chasing 190 or 200, then there is no option of doing that. But he’s a terrific player,” said Gavaskar.

Samson’s knock helped India win the series.
