India bans TikTok and other Chinese apps: It’s a good step, says Saloni Gaur

After the government of India announced its decision of banning 59 apps of Chinese origin on Monday, comedian Saloni Gaur said that it is a good step during an interview with India Today Television. India made the decision to ban the apps including TikTok amid border tensions in Ladakh after a violent face-off between the Indian and Chinese armies.

During her conversation, Saloni described the government’s decision as “demonetisation for creators of TikTok”. In May, Saloni had decided against using TikTok after the platform took down her video on the India-China issue. Criticism followed and TikTok soon unblocked it.

“I never decided to completely go off. I was a little angry at first when they deleted my video. But I think it’s a good step. I am not a defence or economic expert, so please don’t expect a geopolitical answer from me. I am just a comedian. This is like a demonetisation for creators of TikTok. It’s a good step. TikTok mein kuch khaas aisa content hota nahi thaa. They were just wasting water. This was no content. It will save a lot of things. It’s good,” Saloni told India Today Television.

Saloni Gaur has over 56k followers on TikTok. She is popularly known as Nazma Aapi for her videos on current affairs that she releases on Twitter and YouTube.

In a separate post, Saloni also posted on Twitter after the government’s announcement.

TikTok has the maximum number of users in India followed by China and the US.

On Monday, the government released a statement and said that the apps engaged in activities that were “prejudicial to the sovereignty, integrity and defence of India.” Apart from India, Taiwan also banned some Chinese apps. Germany, in fact, also banned Zoom.

TikTok apart, the Indian government has also banned Chinese apps including Shareit, Kwai, UC Browser, Baidu map, Shein, Clash of Kings, DU battery saver and Helo.
