India in medal race for men's freestyle relay, Mohanty ends 15th in gymnastics final
India enjoyed another encouraging day at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Sunday as the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay team qualified for the final, while gymnast Tapan Mohanty finished 15th in the men’s artistic gymnastics all-around final.
INDIA AT COMMONWEALTH GAMES: DAY 3 UPDATES
The Indian quartet of Dhakshan Shashikumar, Aneesh Sunil Kumar Gowda, Aryan Nehra and Srihari Nataraj booked their place in the medal race after finishing third in Heat 2 with a time of 7:39.48, securing a spot among the eight fastest teams across both heats.
Dhakshan gave India a solid start, swimming the opening leg in 1:53.31 to hand over in fourth place. Aneesh then produced one of India’s strongest legs of the race, clocking 1:53.73 to move the team into third at the halfway mark and keep qualification firmly within reach.
Aryan Nehra completed the third leg in 1:56.64 as India slipped to fourth, but the quartet remained well in contention heading into the anchor leg. Srihari Nataraj then produced a composed finish, swimming 1:55.80 to lift India back into third place before the finish.
The Indian team crossed the line behind only Australia and England in Heat 2, with their combined time proving enough to secure a place in the final.
MEDAL CHANCE AWAITS
India will return to the pool for the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay final at 1:56 AM IST, with the medal ceremony scheduled for 2:26 AM IST.
Having produced a confident display in the heats, the Indian quartet will now take on the Commonwealth’s strongest swimming nations with a chance to fight for a podium finish.
MOHANTY ENDS 15TH
Earlier in the day, Tapan Mohanty concluded his campaign in the men’s artistic gymnastics all-around final with a 15th-place finish after scoring 70.100 across the six apparatus.
The Indian gymnast scored 11.850 on floor, 9.500 on pommel horse, 12.000 on rings, 12.700 on vault, 12.450 on parallel bars and 11.600 on the horizontal bar.
Mohanty’s highest score came on the vault, where he earned 12.700, while he also impressed on the parallel bars with 12.450. He received 11.850 on the floor exercise despite incurring a 0.1-point penalty.
Although he finished outside the medal positions, Mohanty produced a steady performance across all six disciplines against a strong Commonwealth field, ending his campaign with a respectable showing.
With the relay team advancing to the final later on Sunday, India will now hope to add another medal to its tally in Glasgow after Rishikanta Singh opened the country’s weightlifting campaign with a silver medal earlier in the day.
