NEW DELHI: Foreign minister S Jaishankar spoke to his Gambian counterpart Mamadou Tangara on Thursday and conveyed India’s deepest condolences on the deaths of children recently in the west African country, while also assuring Gambia that the matter was being properly investigated.
Sixty-six children died allegedly after consuming cough syrups manufactured in India and the Indian government formed a panel on Wednesday to look into the allegations. “Underlined that matter is being seriously investigated by appropriate authorities. We agreed to remain in touch,” tweeted Jaishankar.

The WHO last week warned that four cough and cold remedies manufactured by Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd in Haryana could cause acute kidney injury, according to an AFP report.
Laboratory testing found “unacceptable amounts” of potentially life-threatening contaminants, the WHO said.
