NEW DELHI: India hit out hard at Canada Thursday for allowing Khalistan separatists to celebrate the assassination of former PM India Gandhi with foreign minister S Jaishankar, saying Canada’s indulgence of such activities will not be good for the bilateral relationship.
With Canadian NSA Jody Thomas adding fuel to the fire by accusing India, along with China, Russia and Iran, of foreign interference in Canada, the foreign minister responded by saying this was a case of “ulta chor kotwal ko daatein (thief badmouthing a cop)”.

“I think there is a bigger issue involved. And the bigger issue involved really is the space that Canada has continuously…and frankly we are at a loss to understand other than the requirements of vote bank politics, why anybody would do this,” he said.
“I think there is a larger underlying issue about the space which is given to separatists, to extremists, to people who advocate violence and I think it is not good for relationships and not good for Canada,” he added.

Jaishankar was asked in a press conference about reports related to visuals that surfaced on social media of a float in the Canadian city of Brampton that celebrated the assassination of former PM Indira Gandhi. It was reportedly part of a parade that was organised by some Khalistani elements in Brampton.
The Congress condemned the “glorification” of the assassination of former PM Indira Gandhi in Canada and termed as “unfortunate” the “silence of Prime Minister””on the issue. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate slammed what it said was the absence of a substantial reaction from the government.“All that our government has done is make this one general comment — without even naming Indira Gandhi. Our national interests and security must be above any political concerns. India must take this up officially with the Canadian government,” she said.

Canadian high commissioner Cameron MacKay tweeted Thursday he was appalled by reports about the event. “There is no place in Canada for hate or for the glorification of violence. I categorically condemn these activities,’’ he said.
Congress leader Milind Deora shared a video from the Canadian city, and tweeted, “As an Indian, I’m appalled by the 5 km-long parade which took place in the city of Brampton, Canada, depicting the assassination of Indira Gandhi. It’s not about taking sides, it’s about respect for a nation’s history and the pain caused by its Prime Minister’s assassination.”
Responding to Deora’s tweet, Congress spokesman Jairam Ramesh said, “I entirely agree. This is despicable and EAM Jaishankar should take it up strongly with the Canadian authorities.” Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said, “There should be no politics in condemning this despicable act across party lines.”
