IPL 2025 Auction: Shreyas Iyer elated as Punjab Kings buy him for Rs. 26.75 crore
Shreyas Iyer was elated to join the Punjab Kings as he was bought by the Mohali franchise for Rs. 26.75 crore on Day 1 of the IPL 2025 Auction on Sunday, November 24. Shreyas went on to break the previous record held by Mitchell Starc for being the most expensive player in IPL auction history, when PBKS got him for the amount.
He held on to the tag till Lucknow Super Giants went and bought Rishabh Pant for 27 crore. Shreyas would express his happiness in a video message shared by PBKS on Instagram.
“Hello everyone. Elated to join the Punjab Kings family. I can’t wait to kickstart the season. Looking forward,” said Shreyas.
How did the auction for Shreyas unfold?
The auction for Shreyas Iyer began with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) setting the stage with a base price of Rs 2 crore, eager to bring back their former captain. However, Punjab Kings (PBKS) quickly joined the bidding war, driving the price up to Rs 6 crore. A fierce back-and-forth battle between KKR and PBKS ensued, only for Delhi Capitals to enter the fray, flexing their financial muscle.
Delhiās head coach, Ricky Ponting, who had previously worked with Iyer, appeared determined to reunite with the star player. What followed was a tense bidding exchange between the Capitals and PBKS, neither side willing to back down. As the price soared past Rs 10 crore, KKR and PBKS eventually stepped aside, leaving the final showdown to Delhi and Punjab.
The bid surged past Rs 20 crore, leaving spectators in awe, and eventually eclipsed the previous record held by Mitchell Starc. In the end, Punjab Kings triumphed, securing Iyer for a staggering Rs 26.75 crore, making him their likely new captain and marquee signing.
