JAMMU: Union home minister Amit Shah revealed Thursday a 70% decline in total terrorism-related cases, an 81% reduction in civilian deaths, and a 48% decrease in the death of security forces in J&K since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. He attributed this positive trend to PM Narendra Modi’s efforts to bring peace to the restive region.
“This shows that a new era of happiness and peace has begun in J&K,” he said after launching an e-bus service in Jammu and overseeing the distribution of appointment letters for J&K Combined Examination-2024 via video conferencing from New Delhi.
He emphasised the significant improvement in the situation, noting that organised stone-throwing protests had dropped from 2,654 in 2010 to zero in 2023. “In 2010, 112 civilians died in stone pelting; in 2023, not a single civilian died. In 2010, the number of civilians injured in stone pelting was 6,235, which is zero today,” he said, highlighting the positive impact on civilian safety.
Shah credited the Modi government for its strict measures against terrorist financing, including the sealing and freezing of assets. He highlighted the outlawing of several terrorist organisations as part of the crackdown on terrorism.
The home minister said J&K has moved from a phase dominated by terrorism, bombings, and strikes to a scenario where schools, colleges, industries, and infrastructure take precedence.
Highlighting the economic progress in J&K, Shah said an investment of Rs 297 crore came to the Union territory in 2019-20, increasing to Rs 2,153 crore in 2022-23. Also, an investment of Rs 6,000 crore is in the pipeline.
Shah provided insight into the employment scenario, stating that 34,440 vacancies have been filled after the abrogation of Article 370. He said corruption in appointments has been eliminated.
On the occasion of Voter’s Day, Shah encouraged youth aged 18 and above to actively participate in the democratic process. He acknowledged the successful conduct of panchayat and block development council elections in elections in 2018 and 2019 respectively, showcasing high voter turnouts. “The Modi government has given an opportunity to 35,000 panches, sarpanches, and public representatives of local bodies to work in a democracy.”
Shah also highlighted the completion of 173 projects under the Smart City Mission and the allocation of homes to 1.45 lakh people in the region between 2019 and 2024.
