La Liga head Javier Tebas slams Super League proposal as 'even worse' for football

Amidst the ever-escalating speculations around the formation of a new European Super League, La Liga President, Javier Tebas criticised the proposed competition, suggesting that the newly proposed model of the A22 is “even worse” for football.

“With the new model it’s even worse,” Javier Tebas said while talking about the European Super League.

Tebas suggested that the implementation of the proposed European Super League will hit the Spanish League and other domestic leagues with a revenue loss of 50-55% due to its midweek fixture plan, stating that the league will not be open to outsiders.

“It does not fulfill European sports law… It really is closed,” Tebas added.

Tebas said this new proposal by promoter group A22 is less open than the previously rejected 2019 idea and just a revised version of a 2021 plan where 12 major clubs wanted a breakaway league with no relegation for core members.

The new plan for the Super League includes three tiers, allocating 20 spots to its third tier based on domestic performance, amongst which only two teams are promoted yearly to the higher tiers. On the other hand, UEFA currently allocates 96 group phase spots in its competitions primarily based on domestic league performance.

This newly revised plan for the Super League surfaced on December 21, the same day when the European Court of Justice ruled against the basis of UEFA and FIFA’s restricting the formation of a new league, without explicitly mandating the approval of such a league.

The Spanish League President also said that the majority of big European clubs like Bayern Munich and Manchester City do not approve of the idea of a problematic Super League, as they have already gone on record to oppose it.
