Learn to chase like Kohli: Virender Sehwag’s advice to Raghuvanshi after KKR collapse
Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has urged young Mumbai batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who is currently representing Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League, to learn the art of finishing run chases from the ‘chase master’, Virat Kohli.
On Thursday, KKR were set a daunting target of 227 when Raghuvanshi walked in to bat after opener Finn Allen was dismissed inside the powerplay.
The 21-year-old had a prime opportunity to guide his side towards their first win of the new IPL season and he started like that. The right-hander played an impressive knock, bringing up his second consecutive fifty of the season in just 27 balls to anchor the chase. However, his innings was cut short when he was run out in the 11th over.
“He played really well, but these are opportunities that have to be made the most of. If he had batted till the 18th or 20th over, he could have taken KKR much closer,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz. “I always say that if you want to learn something from Virat Kohli, learn how he approaches run chases. Try to stay till the end and win the game for your team. If he had done that, he would have become a star.”
A mix-up with Rinku Singh led to Raghuvanshi’s dismissal, which triggered a collapse for KKR. The team slipped from 120 for 4 to being bowled out for 161, eventually falling short in their chase and suffering another defeat early in the season.
The defeat led to an outburst by captain Ajinkya Rahane in the post-match press conference. The former Indian Test captain was quick to defend his performance in the shorter format, citing that his strike rate remains among the best since 2023.
“My strike rate… I have the best strike rate so far, from 2023. People who are talking are probably not watching the game or have a certain agenda against me,” Rahane told the reporters after the match. ”They don’t like me playing. They don’t like to watch me play. The amount of success I’ve got, I guess they’re jealous about that.”
The three-time IPL champions will now face last seasons’ finalists Punjab Kings at the Eden Garden on April 6, followed by a Lucknow Super Giants visit on April 9.
